FOR ALL PATIENTS AND THEIR KIDS.PLEASE LET LISA OR DR. DENISE KNOW WHEN YOU WILL BE BRINGING IN YOUR CHILDREN WITH THEIR BACKPACKS TO ALLOW FOR SOME EXTRA TIME. We are dedicating September to kids. This month can be very stressful or filled with excitement for parents and/or their children. This is also the time when families prepare for school by getting school supplies, new outfits, haircuts, shoes and of course a new backpack. This is usually when things can go wrong and parents simply don't know how to choose the best backpack for their kids. A recent study has shown that kids as young as 5 are now experiencing back and neck pain. Most kids don't know how to voice their discomfort and spinal misalignment can also result in changes to their behavior. Here are some key signs:
- Headaches
- Poor Concentration
- Poor Memory
- Poor Sleeping Habits
- Poor Posture
- Aggressive Behavior
- Unwillingness to participate
- Constant Colds/Sickness
Up until the 1980's most schools would have a team of doctors and nurses come to schools all over Ontario and screen children for spinal abnormalities. Unfortunately this has stopped and many kids go without a proper spinal assessment usually until things are too late. This is why we are giving everyone that opportunity to get their child's spine checked at NO COST. Yes, we are doing free spinal screenings to anyone under the age of 18 for free regardless if they are patients or not.

Spinal misalignment if found early and corrected can avoid long-term head, neck and shoulder problems for the rest of someone's life while increasing their bodies function and improving their health.

Please share this message with anyone you know that does not get regular spinal assessments. You can change someone's life and not even know it.

Here are some helpful tips that will help your child carry his or her backpack with ease.

Carrying a heavy load can lead to poor posture and a distorted spinal column. Over time, this can cause muscle strain, headaches, back, neck and arm pain, and even nerve damage. A heavy backpack carried on one shoulder forces the muscles and spine to compensate for the uneven weight. This places stress on the mid and lower back.

​1. Select a lightweight backpack in vinyl or canvas.

2. Pick a backpack with two wide, adjustable and padded shoulder straps, along with a hip or waist strap, and padded back.

3. Try the backpack for fit and comfort – ensure it's not too snug around the shoulders and armpits, and that it's proportionate to the wearer's body type.

Packing it properly

Your child's backpack should only contain what is needed for that day.
A full backpack should be no more than 5 to 10% of the wearer's body weight.
Example: Child Weight: 60 Lbs = Backpack 6 Lbs (That's the weight of lunch and one text book)
Place the heaviest objects close to the body and light or odd-shaped objects away from the back.x

Putting the backpack on

Place the backpack on a flat surface and slip on the backpack one shoulder at a time, adjust the straps to fit comfortably. 

When lifting the backpack use both arms and legs, and bend at the knees – give young children a hand.
