It is common to get strange looks from people I talk to about taking infants to the chiropractor. I know what is going through their heads: Is it safe? Babies don’t have back pain. Do babies get adjusted the same way I do? These are legitimate concerns for any parent, but to answer them I will begin with the most important question: Why?

  • 10 percent of the newborn babies had perfect, freely mobile skulls or cranial mechanisms.
  • 10 percent had severe trauma to the head, evident even to untrained observers.

  • The remaining 80 percent all had some strain patterns in the cranial mechanism.

Left uncorrected, this trauma continues to impact a baby’s spinal growth and development, reducing the healthy function of her nerve system. This can cause many health challenges later in life that could easily have been prevented.

Birth Trauma

Birth in its many different forms can be quite traumatic. While each birth is unique, there is always a chance that the baby suffers some sort of strain due to a variety of reasons. Even the most natural births can result in trauma that goes undetected. As researcher G. Gutmann has written, “The trauma from the birth process remains an underpublicized and therefore significantly under-treated problem.”

What can cause birth trauma?

  • Very short labor

  • Very long labor

  • Failure of the cervix to dilate

  • Use of Pitocin to strengthen/induce uterine contractions

  • Use of forceps or vacuum extraction

  • Cord around baby’s neck

  • Cesarean delivery (due to lack of progress)

  • Pulling or twisting on the head to deliver the infant’s body

Evidence

Beyond the Frymann study detailed above, a Harvard University pathologist, Dr. Abraham Towbin, found evidence of spinal injury common as a result of the birthing process. He also found evidence of spinal injury in many cases of SIDS and infant respiratory conditions.

Birth trauma often causes neurological dysfunction. In fact, a study by Gutmann examining more than 1,000 infants concluded that approximately 80 percent had some form of nerve dysfunction. This is of utmost importance, since 65 percent of neurological development (brain and nerve system) occurs in a child’s first year. During this crucial time it is vital that the nerve system be healthy so the child can grow and develop to her potential.

What can nerve dysfunction from birth trauma look like?

  • trouble breathing

  • reflux/frequent spitting up

  • irritability/colic

  • difficulty nursing (impaired sucking/swallowing or head positioning)

  • balance issues

  • sleeping difficulty

  • delayed developmental milestones

Chiropractic care is focused solely on removing nerve dysfunction (which improves brain-body communication) so a new baby can grow, develop, and function at its highest potential. We as humans were born with an innate ability to heal. Chiropractors minimize the obstructions to that ability.

Spinal Elongation

A baby’s spine lengthens by 50 percent in his first year. At no other time does this growth happen so rapidly, so you want to make sure your baby is in proper alignment, ensuring proper symmetrical growth.

The Hueter-Volkman law states that bones change shape with pressure by slowing bone growth in response to pressure (compression forces). Any spinal misalignment changes the balance of pressure across the spinal bones and can lead to asymmetric bone development. This is the difference between having a spine like a straight, strong oak and having a spine like a crooked tree.

The first year of life is also the time of spinal curvature development. There are curves called lordosis present in your neck and lower back, and curves called kyphosis in your mid-back and sacrum. These spinal curves are necessary for movement, balance, upright posture, protection, and shock absorption. Without being in alignment during this crucial time, a baby’s spinal curves may not develop properly—giving him a poor foundation for later in life.

Optimize the nerve system

The central nerve system consists of the brain and spinal cord, and it processes everything that your body does. Movement, a heartbeat, seeing a baby smile, feeling the sun on your skin, laughing, smelling, creativity—all are coordinated by the brain and spinal cord.

In infants the central nerve system also controls their growth and development. Infancy is the time of greatest brain and proprioceptor (body position sensors) development, so infancy is the time to ensure the health of the nerve system. Chiropractors who take care of babies look for disturbances in their nerve systems that interfere with healthy growth and development.

Remember: If your baby’s spine stays out of balance, it can put tension on the nerve system.

Is it safe for infants to get adjusted?

Yes. Adverse events linked to pediatric chiropractic care are virtually nonexistent, estimated at 1 in 250 million pediatric visits. There is not a single medical procedure safer than that, but I would encourage parents to seek out chiropractors who routinely take care of children in their practice.

When adjusting a newborn, a skilled chiropractor will only use the amount of pressure that you would use to comfortably push on your eye. The child gets checked by hand and with technology, then is placed in position (usually in Mommy’s lap), and gentle pressure is applied. That’s all there is to it. It’s simple, safe, and effective.

Two major studies on chiropractic and infantile colic have shown that over a period of two weeks (usually three visits) 94 percent of babies adjusted by chiropractors showed a successful rating, with 25 percent showing improvement after the first adjustment. Dr. S. Vallone, in a 2007 study, concluded, “Chiropractic adjustments in the early stages of neurologic imprinting appear to safely and effectively address the craniocervical dysfunction and help restore natural, efficient suckling patterns for infants who are unable to successfully latch.”

Better immunity through a healthy spine and nerve system

A leader in psychoneuroimmunology, Dr. Candice Pert, credits chiropractic as having a significant effect on maximizing immunity via maintenance of a healthy nerve system.

A pilot study examined the relationship between intensity of chiropractic care and incidence of childhood diseases. The results showed that children who went to the chiropractor more than seven times per year had an increased resistance (immunity) to common childhood diseases.

Many parents, myself included, have their children checked regularly by chiropractors as part of a healthy lifestyle to help them develop to their potential. Chiropractic is a safe, gentle, and effective way to address nerve dysfunction and promote overall wellness in the newborn and growing child.

It is my sincerest intent that this information will help as many families achieve better health through chiropractic. Today there are more than 77,000 licensed Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) in the U.S. alone, plus thousands more practicing in countries throughout the world. (1) As one of the most popular types of alternative treatment approaches (meaning those that are non-medical), millions of people each year seek chiropractic care.

Since its official beginning more than 100 years ago, chiropractic education and care has since come a very long way. While in the past certain medical doctors may not have spoken positively about the field of chiropractic, speculating that chiropractic adjustments weren’t necessarily as effective as treatments like drugs or surgery, today things are different. Many MD’s regularly refer their patients to Chiropractors for help with a range of symptoms, everything from migraines and joint pain, to constipation and visual problems.

Chiropractic care is considered an alternative treatment approach to taking pain-killing drugs or undergoing surgery. Many people don’t realize that similarly to medical doctors, Chiropractors spend years in training — thoroughly learning about subjects like anatomy, physiology, nutrition and holistic health.

When it comes to treating all-too-common complaints such as low back pain, organ dysfunction or other chronic disease symptoms, what is a Chiropractor capable of doing to help? Evidence shows that the influence of a chiropractic adjustment goes well beyond bad backs. Many unwanted symptoms suffered by children and adults today can be helped through the neurological influence of an adjustment.

Complementary to the adjustment, many Chiropractors today also offer their patients more than manual spinal adjustments: They are also well-versed in a variety of nutritional therapies, herbal supplementation, spinal physical therapy and stress management. They also work with other practitioners such as massage therapists or acupuncturists. Meanwhile, Chiropractors offer one of the best ways to prevent ailments, as opposed to only treating them.

What is a Chiropractor?

Chiropractors are trained doctors who specialize in detecting and reducing misalignments of the spine called vertebral subluxation that interfere with central nervous system function. Subluxations can cause inflammation of the joint and nerve root as well as lack of motion which can cause joint degeneration.
Normal vs. subluxated joint - Dr. Axe
Chiropractors work in the field of complimentary or alternative healthcare, treating patients by performing hands-on chiropractic adjustments in order to help with postural restoration, spinal alignment, nervous system function and maintenance of health. Chiropractic physicians are trained to use their hands as their “instrument,” carefully adjusting the joints of the body, especially the spine.

What are a Chiropractor’s specialties?

You might think of chiropractic adjustments as only being helpful for treating problems like back pain or a stiff neck, but that’s far from true. In many ways, Chiropractors have a “stress-centered” view of health: the underlying belief of chiropractic care surrounds the fact that the body has an innate ability to heal itself once interferences or “obstacles” (sources of stress that stand in the way of well-being) are removed. (2)

Interferences that can negatively impact the nervous system and therefore diminish overall health, including the following: poor posture, poor nutrition, physical and emotional stress, muscular tension and tightness, and illness caused by a number of issues, including poor digestive health.

What is a Chiropractor hoping to do when they perform adjustments on patients?

Restoring motion and alignment of the spine is the first step in helping the rest of the body to self-regulate, self-maintain and self-restore, due to the spine’s direct neurological influence on the rest of the body. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) states that ” The benefits of chiropractic care extend to general health issues, since our body structure affects our overall function.” (3)

  • To simplify a complex process, they are tapping into the recuperative abilities of the body by restoring the relationship between a properly aligned spinal column and a well-functioning nervous system.
  • Chiropractors are trained to carefully analyze the spine to determine the presence of vertebral subluxation, which is when a spinal bone misaligns, causing interference to the nervous system and nerve irritation. In other words, chiropractic care is beneficial because it allows for better communication throughout the body, especially between the spine and the brain, also called the Central Nervous System (CNS).
  • The CNS is the controller of someone’s overall health, considering it regulates communication and coordination throughout the body that affects every organ, tissue and cell. You can think of the brain as the main commander (or control center) of the CNS and the whole body. The nervous system sends chemical messages to and from the brain via the spinal cord, which is not the actual backbone (vertebra), but the cord that runs within the bones in the back and contains threadlike nerves that branch out elsewhere.

Top Benefits of Chiropractic

Does Chiropractic work? And for what ailments?

According to Dr. Dan Sullivan — Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), speaker, author and one of the most well respected holistic health experts in the country —

One of the biggest challenges that Chiropractors face is the public’s perception of Chiropractic. Many still believe that the benefits of chiropractic adjustments are limited to back and neck pain relief. But that is just a small portion of the benefits that chiropractic care delivers. Some of the greatest evidence today shows exactly why Chiropractors have been seeing amazing results in their offices, each week, for over 120 years, with symptoms and conditions seemingly unrelated to the spine.

It all comes back to how Chiropractic positively influences the nervous system. From improved breathing and digestion, to increased immunity, better organ function, fertility and so much more, we now know from a scientific and research standpoint how adjustments can have such far-reaching benefits.

Patients who can benefit from visiting a Chiropractor include those with symptoms or diseases such as:

  • Back pain (4)
  • Neck pain (5)
  • Migraines or frequent headaches (6)
  • Asthma (7)
  • Sciatica (8)
  • Back pain due to pregnancy (9)
  • Acid Reflux (10)
  • Colic (11)
  • Heart problems including high blood pressure (1213)
  • Joint pains and osteoarthritis (16)
  • Neurological problems such as epilepsy (17)
  • Brain/Central Nervous System dysfunction
  • Insomnia/trouble sleeping (18)
  • TMJ
  • Injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments and joints
  • Indigestion or upset stomach
  • Dental or visual problems
  • Injuries due to accidents or trauma

One of the reasons why Chiropractic is tied to so many benefits is because it has been shown to help reduce inflammation, the root cause of many different diseases. (19) Another factor behind why Chiropractic can help numerous health challenges has to do with it balancing out the bodies sympathetic/parasympathetic response of the nervous system. Most people live in a sympathetic “fight or flight” response and a chiropractic adjustment in the upper cervical region and sacral region can stimulate a parasympathetic response that reduces stress and allows certain organs to function to a higher degree including the digestive and endocrine systems.

A study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine done on 40 participants found after receiving a cervical adjustment, pulse rates decreased, blood pressure balanced and there was a significantly positive parasympathetic response. (20)

This is a prime example of why so many people choose to visit a Chiropractor on a regular basis even if they don’t have symptoms because they understand the benefits of decreasing ongoing stress and maintaining a healthy spine and nervous system.

Because chiropractic adjustments can help decrease the stress load on the nervous system, chiropractic care sets the stage for recovery and healing. Contrary to that of most medical doctors or other healthcare providers, Chiropractors do not seek to cure or remove the symptom, ailment or condition. It is important to note that Chiropractors focus on removing interference from the nervous system so that patients can heal and function the way they were intended. (21)

Chiropractors take pride in educating their patients about how the human body is designed to heal, and that the body is programmed to be constantly striving towards health. Anyone with altered spinal alignment or movement can be helped by a Chiropractor. However, because the central nervous system directs all healing in the body, many symptoms and conditions have been proven to be helped through the influence of a chiropractic adjustment.

Below are some of the greatest benefits associated with chiropractic care:

1. Back pain

Spinal adjustments and certain other chiropractic techniques have been shown in many studies to help treat neuro-musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain. Back pain is one of the most common reasons that adults visit Chiropractors every year. Chiropractic for treatment of back pain has been so well-supported in studies that it’s no longer even considered “alternative care.”

According to the National Institute of Health,

Spinal manipulation is one of several options — including exercise, massage and physical therapy — that can provide mild-to-moderate relief from low-back pain. Spinal manipulation appears to work as well as conventional treatments such as applying heat, using a firm mattress and taking pain-relieving medications.

2. Neck pain

Neck pain is another common problem that can be caused by factors such as injuries, trauma, stress, poor sleep, arthritis, older age and degenerative disc disease. Chiropractors use techniques including adjustments, mobilization, massage or rehabilitative exercises to help relieve pressure placed on the neck. A 2007 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found strong evidence that patients with chronic neck pain showed significant pain-level improvements following spinal adjustments that lasted for at least 12 weeks post-treatment.

3. Migraines and Headaches

Adjustments to the spine, neck and head can be very effective for treating recurring headaches, including tension headaches. Adjustments help restore posture of the head and relieve pressure and tension on nerves that contribute to headaches. A group trial found that 22 percent of people who had chiropractic treatment saw the number of attacks drop by 90 percent. In that same study, 49 percent said they had a significant reduction in pain intensity. Compared to most medical treatments, few interventions can initiate headache relief naturally, without the risks of taking drugs long-term, like chiropractic adjustments can.

4. TMJ

There’s evidence showing that symptoms due to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, such as pain while sleeping or trouble opening up the mouth and chewing properly, can be managed with adjustments that help correct posture of the neck and jaw. One method that has been shown to be useful for TMJ is called the Activator Method, which involves making precise adjustments to the jaw with a small hand-held instrument.

5. Injuries of the Musculoskeletal System

Many symptoms due to injuries affecting involving the muscles, ligaments and joints can be treated with chiropractic care. Chiropractors use a variety of precise techniques like adjustments, massage therapy, stretching, exercises and weights to help relax tense muscles and improve posture. This helps to treat symptoms including muscle pain, tightness, reduced range of motion, weakness due to muscular compensations and spasms. Certain muscles that are overactive can be “turned off” while others that are under-used can be “turned on.”

6. Digestive Problems

Digestive issues can be tied to both stress and spinal misalignments, due to how both negatively affect the nervous system’s communication with the organs, glands and tissues of the digestive system. Following chiropractic treatments, the gut-brain connection can be restored in order to improve control and function of nerves and muscles in the GI tract. Chiropractic techniques aimed at evoking relaxation, improving blood flow to the digestive organs, and improving communication between the nervous system and gut are all used to treat a range of digestive problems — such as IBS, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, etc.

7. Joint Pain

According to the Arthritis Foundation, chiropractic is considered one of the safest therapies someone can use to treat joint pain. Chiropractors can help to relieve joint pain, such as those caused by osteoarthritis, by gently manipulating soft tissue and helping to improve overall functionality and posture. DCs may use active exercises and slow stretches to increase range of motion in stiff joints, as well as to relieve pressure placed on certain nerves or to stop muscle spasms that contribute to pain.

History of Chiropractic Care

The natural healing abilities attributed to chiropractic care was first developed by a man named D.D. Palmer in 1895. According to records regarding the first treatments, it all started when Harvey Lillard — a man who was deaf in one ear — had seen Palmer for help with his condition.

Mr. Lillard was hoping that D.D. Palmer had something up his sleeve to help his deafness. When Palmer learned that Lillard suffered a head injury that preceded his hearing condition, he evaluated his spine and noticed that a vertebra in the upper back seemed wildly out of alignment. (22) According to Palmer:

I had a case of heart trouble which was not improving. I examined the spine and found a displaced vertebra pressing against the nerves, which innervate the heart. I adjusted the vertebra and gave immediate relief — nothing ‘accidental’ or ‘crude’ about this. Then I began to reason if two diseases, so dissimilar as deafness and heart trouble, came from impingement, a pressure on nerves, were not other disease due to a similar cause? Thus the science (knowledge) and art (adjusting) of Chiropractic were formed at that time.

Palmer coined his manual therapy technique “chiropractic,” which comes from the two Greek words cheiros and praktikos (meaning “with hands”). While D.D Palmer is considered to be the first Chiropractor, records show that similar adjustments have been utilized to help the body heal itself dating back to the time of Hippocrates. Since the time of Palmer, millions of people across the globe have benefited from this manual therapy. In 1897, Palmer helped establish the very first chiropractic school, located in the U.S. and now called the Palmer College of Chiropractic (formerly the Palmer Chiropractic School and Cure).

Chiropractor Education & Licensure

According to the International Chiropractors Association, “Chiropractic is the fastest growing and second-largest primary healthcare profession.” There are approximately 95,000 doctors of chiropractic (DCs) practicing around the world, and more than 10,000 students currently enrolled in chiropractic education in the U.S. alone.

Once their training is completed, many Chiropractors feel that they specialize in a combination of science, art and philosophy, practicing a holistic system of health that takes into account the many different aspects of their patients’ lives. Once graduated from a school of chiropractic, doctors of chiropractic can work in private practice or in clinical settings, specializing in areas including work-place safety, stress management, injury prevention, postural correction and nutritional counseling.

The formal education required to become a Chiropractor focuses on teaching practitioners to effectively locate patients’ vertebral subluxations and remove them through the use of specific adjustment techniques. Chiropractic education also emphasizes the practice’s underlying philosophy, that the body wants to and is capable of healing itself.

How many years of schooling does a Chiropractor receive?

According to the American Chiropractic Association, “Educational and licensing requirements for doctors of chiropractic (DCs) are among the most stringent of any of the health care professions.” DCs must complete four years of doctoral graduate school in order to qualify for exams that must be passed before becoming licensed. Prior to beginning graduate studies in chiropractic training, four years of pre-medical undergraduate college education must be completed. Undergraduate courses must include biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, psychology and related lab work.

How to become a Chiropractor

After approximately 4,620 hours of graduate classroom education, laboratory work and clinical internship, prospective DCs qualify to take exams administered by state licensing boards. As part of their training, DCs must complete a minimum of a one-year clinical-based program dealing with patients in a treatment setting.  Exact requirements in order to practice vary by state, but usually DC licensure requires successful completion of a medical licensing or acceptance of a certificate issued by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE). Once a DC obtains a license in the state in which they wish to practice, they can began seeing patients in a variety of settings.

DCs must continue their education each year, completing ongoing training in order to stay up to date on the latest treatment approaches and to maintain their licensure. Many also go on to complete training programs in other complementary approaches, such as Active Release Technique, Functional Medicine, Chiropractic Neurology, Pediatrics, Sports Chiropractic and Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT), a type of natural therapeutic system that has the goal of correcting learned movements and muscle functions within the body.

For help finding a qualified and licensed DC in your area, you can search by location on the International Chiropractic Association website. Additionally, you can ask your primary doctor for a recommendation or seek out referrals from friends, family members, colleagues, etc.

What are some chiropractic colleges/schools?

There are now more than 40 chiropractic schools located throughout the world, including 20 within the U.S. In the U.S, the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) and its Commission on Accreditation is the national organization that is considered to be the authority when it comes to regulating the quality of training offered by different chiropractic colleges.

The CEE was established in the 1930s and is now recognized by the Secretary of the United States Department of Education and is a member of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (C.H.E.A.) and the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors (A.S.P.A.). In the 1990s, the Association of Chiropractic Colleges was established to provide support for chiropractic schools and research, in addition to helping promote chiropractic care to patients and doctors. If you’re interested in a future career as a Chiropractor, visit the CCE’s website to review information about prerequisites, lists of accredited courses and college reviews.

Straight vs. Mixer Chiropractors

While training for all Chiropractors is rooted in the same underlying philosophy and principles, today Chiropractors vary widely in terms of how they are specifically educated and how they choose to actually practice once licensed.

  • Some practicing Chiropractors have a more conservative/traditional approach, sticking closely to the foundations of chiropractic care based on vertebral subluxation techniques that have been practiced for decades. Others are more “modern,” blending different treatment approaches in order to offer their patients a wider range of alternative therapies.
  • Even various chiropractic colleges and institutions differ in terms of how traditional versus modern/liberal (or “straight vs. mixed) they are, which influences the types of doctors that graduate from different colleges.

To describe how different Chiropractors fall somewhere along a spectrum and to distinguish between different types (traditional vs. more modern), the labels “straight” and “mixer” are often used to:

  • Straight Chiropractors range in terms of their exact beliefs and patient offerings, but generally speaking they stick to spinal adjustments as their core offering, and typically stay away from using rehabilitation, nutrition and other therapies in their clinics.
  • Mixer Chiropractors are more likely to work with other healthcare providers, to practice multidisciplinary care, give dietary advice, prescribe supplements, teach spinal rehabilitative exercises and do other treatment techniques including acupuncture and massage.

Chiropractic Organizations:

Large chiropractic organizations, including the International Chiropractic Association (ICA) and the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), take different stances on certain issues in chiropractic care. There are certain conflicts between the two associations, as they have different perspectives regarding how Chiropractors should practice, and generally speaking all Chiropractors will usually take one side or the other.

As Dr. Dan Sullivan explains,

There has always been a divide in the profession between the more traditional-practicing ‘straight’ Chiropractors and the more broad-scoped ‘mixer’ Chiropractors. Both types of Chiropractors help their patients overcome health challenges and uniquely improve function for all ages through the location and correction of vertebral subluxation. And the continued advancement of the profession centers around the fact that the body is self-healing and that chiropractic adjustments remove interference to allow better function and health for children and adults of all ages. Both types of Chiropractors agree on this central focus. And the best part is that the scientific evidence now explains and supports the overall practice of Chiropractic like never before.

  • The ICA states that they are “committed to the rights of the chiropractic practitioner and his/her patients as it was nine decades ago. ICA welcomes all Chiropractors who believe in and want: advancing chiropractic’s distinct identity as a drugless healing art, full integration of chiropractic with other health care professions —not subordination” and other benefits.
  • The ACA states that they are “The largest national association in the U.S. dedicated to advancing the chiropractic profession.” The ACA emphasizes the need for evidence-based research to support the field of chiropractic. They support lobbies for pro-chiropractic legislation and policies, aim to promote a positive public image of chiropractic, provide ongoing professional and educational opportunities for doctors of chiropractic, and offer leadership for the advancement of the profession.

Chiropractors vs. Medical Doctors

Is a Chiropractor a doctor? Yes, as mentioned above, Chiropractors hold a degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC). (24) They are not medical doctors (MDs) because they do not write their patients prescriptions or perform surgeries. Chiropractors uniquely help their patients heal through natural means by removing interferences from the central nervous system. The education that DCs receive focuses on all basic sciences, anatomy and physiology, with special emphasis on the health and function of the spine and central nervous system.

Two of the leading alternative health care systems practiced in the U.S. and elsewhere today are osteopathy (osteopathic manipulative therapy) and chiropractic care. These two approaches are closely related and require similar training, but osteopaths do more global manipulations of the spine where Chiropractors do more specific vertebral adjustments.

  • Chiropractors are holistic, non-invasive practitioners who focus on disease prevention as well as symptom management. DCs specialize in vertebral subluxation, or removing interference of the nervous system due to a misalignment and/ or abnormal motion of spinal vertebra. When vertebral subluxation is left untreated, it leads to improper communication between nerves, organs, muscles and tissues. This contributes to widespread function control problems and can lead to symptoms in any or all parts of the body.
  • Chiropractic is the art of restoring the body to its natural state utilizing many different techniques, which can include manual adjustments but also stress-reduction, inflammation-reduction and dietary improvement. Rather than using medications to achieve this, DCs focus on removing irritation interference in the central nervous system (subluxations) that causes the body to break down and dysfunction.
  • DCs are somewhat different from primary care physicians, or MDs, because they emphasize “a whole-person approach” to treatment and care. And rather than focusing only on relieving symptoms once a patient has already started to feel unwell, Chiropractors try to find the root cause of their patients’ problems in order to fix the underlying issue.
  • DCs commonly get to know their patients well, taking their time during visits to discuss the patient’s unique symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, level of stress, diet and sleep. It’s very important for Chiropractors to really understand their patients in a holistic sense, in order to not only develop a treatment plan, but a way to help prevent symptoms from returning in the future.
  • Seeing a Chiropractor is not meant to replace visits with your regular doctor. In fact, most Chiropractors have a working relationship with local Medical Doctors, co-managing the care of a patient to provide the best possible outcomes. A written referral is not needed to see a doctor of chiropractic (DC) because they are primary care physicians. Just like seeing a MD, chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major many medical plans, workers’ compensation, Medicare, some Medicaid plans and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans.

Different Approaches in Chiropractic Care

DCs use hundreds of different approaches in chiropractic practice, some (but not all) involving thrust techniques. The difference between most chiropractic techniques is the degree of force applied. Most adjustments are done quickly, involving high speed to help with realignment. Sometimes an instrument besides the hands is also used.

Spinal adjustments are among many chiropractic techniques, but not the only types that are offered. Below you’ll find a brief description of some of the most common chiropractic treatment techniques that evolved over the past several decades, which address abnormalities in the spine, neck, head, pelvis, joints and muscles. When you visit a chiropractor, you might be treated with any number or combination of techniques, depending on your specific anatomy and needs:

    • Activator: A hand held instrument that applies an impulse and is used to help release joint and muscle tension. Done quickly with a gentle, low force, making it suitable for patients who are sensitive.
    • Applied Kinesiology: Helps to assess the nervous system by utilizing changes in muscular strength as different sensory stimuli are applied to the body. This allows for the DC to determine which nerves are “speaking” most to muscles. Often used to help determine which treatments are needed.
    • Atlas Orthogonal [AOT]: Aims to restore structural integrity from cervical vertebral malposition. Uses a percussion instrument to correct postural restoration without manipulation or surgery. Focuses attention on the the Atlas, the top vertebrae of the spine that supports the head. Involves very gentle touch, reducing cervical spine misalignment and its related symptomatology.
    • Blair Technique: Adjusts the upper cervical area, focusing on correcting misalignments in the first bone of the spine (Atlas) where it connects to the head (Occiput).
    • *Chiropractic Biophysics [CBP]Corrects improper curvatures of the spine using a combination of traditional chiropractic manipulation, rehabilitation exercises, spinal traction and stretches to remodel tissues of the spine.
    • Cox Flexion Distraction: Utilizes an adjusting table that has movable parts, along with a rocking motion, in order to stretch and decompress tissue surrounding the spine.
    • *Diversified: Involves manual thrusts focused on restoring normal biomechanical function, including those in the extremity joints.
    • *Gonstead: Specific method of analysis by the use of nervoscopes, full spine x-rays and precise adjusting techniques. Helps to correct torquing of the spine in order to take pressure off of certain intervertebral discs.
    • *Motion PalpationA method that helps to locate joint dysfunction within the spinal column and extremities. Palpation is the most frequently used diagnostic tool in chiropractic, allowing the DC to feel for subluxations in the vertebrae. In motion palpation the patient’s joints are mobilized, bending and flexing, or moving in different planes of motion to test range of motion.
    • Network Chiropractic: Also called Network Spinal Analysis (NSA), this method involves regarding the body as a whole, integrated system. Light touch is used over the spinal cord to help activate receptors and increase the ability of the nerves and the spinal cord to communicate clearly. This is associated with improvements in gut-brain connection, increased self-awareness and reduced tension.
    • Pettibon: Uses specially designed head, shoulder and hip weights that patients wear for up to 20 minutes daily until the spine is corrected, along with specific exercises.  Weights help alter the head, spine and pelvis’s alignment, correcting sensory input to the nervous system and forming new muscle patterns.
    • Sacral Occipital Technique [SOT]: Focuses on the relationship of between the sacrum and occiput (back of the skull) and is a form of Cranial Sacral therapy. This technique pays close attention to the the cranial bones and sacrum working to normalize cerebral spinal fluid flow and improve organ function.
    • CLEAR Scoliosis Correction: A technique that combines adjustments, spinal exercises and vibration treatments to reduce scoliotic curves of the spine. 5–10 percent of the population has scoliosis and this condition can cause pain, joint degeneration and organic malfunction if it is not managed correctly.
    • *ThompsonInvolves the use of an adjusting table with a weighing mechanism, helping to add precise amount of tension and keep the patient in an exact up position before the thrust is given.
    • Torque Release: Directs attention to the source of spinal tension by testing posture starting from the feet up. Helps to determine which treatments are needed to relieve tension in the spine and spinal cord, which causes abnormal muscular patterns. Uses relatively small force corrections to achieve alterations in the spine and correct structural distortions using mechanical devices including the“Integrator” and the “Activator.”
    • *Toggle RecoilA technique in which the hands are placed lightly on the area of joint restriction and then a fast, light thrust is applied. The hands are quickly removed from the contact point.
    • *Upper Cervical Chiropractic: Focuses on the relationship between the upper cervical spine (neck) and its influence on the central nervous system. Uses x-rays of the head and neck to determine which types of precise, non-invasive, gentle touch will help return the bones of the neck to a normal position.
    • *Webster: Involves sacral analysis and diversified adjustments used to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/SI joint dysfunction. Aims to improve neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis in order to reduce tension and tightness throughout the torso. Often used throughout pregnancy in preparation for a safer, easier birth and recovery.

Safety of Chiropractic Care

Is visiting a Chiropractor safe?

The short answer is yes, very safe. You might be thinking that chiropractic adjustments sound risky, considering how sensitive the spine and spinal cord are to overall health and function. But in fact, chiropractic has been shown to be one of the safest treatment approaches in healthcare today. Chiropractic adjustments are very precise and careful, which is why DCs need to receive extensive training to ensure safety.

Thanks to Dr. Josh Axe and Dr. Dan Sullivan for publishing this article at https://draxe.com/what-is-a-chiropractor/

According to The National Institute of Health, “A 2007 study of treatment outcomes for 19,722 chiropractic patients in the United Kingdom concluded that minor side effects (such as temporary soreness similar to that which can be experienced after a workout) after cervical spine manipulation were relatively common, but that the risk of a serious adverse event was ‘low to very low’ immediately or up to 7 days after treatment.” Another study found that “there was no evidence that visiting a Chiropractor put people at greater risk than visiting a primary care physician.” (25)

While chiropractic treatment is overall very safe, it’s still possible to experience some potential adverse effects. The risks are low, but may include some temporary soreness, stiffness or tenderness following adjustments. Mild side effects typically go away on their own within about 24 hours.

Also keep in mind that a major advantage of visiting of a Chiropractor for help with pain or other symptoms is that you won’t be treated with drugs, which often cause a number of side effects. You may also be able to avoid having unnecessary surgery, which isn’t always effective and can pose its own risks.

In recent years, there’s been some concern in the media over whether chiropractic care could increase the risk of more serious side effects, such as stroke, neurological problems, internal bleeding or vertebral artery dissection. A number of studies have found no evidence that there is any link between chiropractic adjustments and suffering from a stroke. (26, 27)

Final Thoughts on Chiropractors

  • What is a Chiropractor? A Chiropractor is a trained doctor who specializes in detecting and reducing vertebral subluxation, or misalignments of the spine that interfere with the ability of the body’s nervous system to send and receive messages to and from the body. They also practice other holistic treatment approaches, including nutritional guidance, stress relief and soft tissue mobilization.
  • Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) must complete formal training that is similar to medical school required for primary care doctors. The process of becoming a DC involves 4 years of undergraduate study and an additional 4–5 years of graduate school, including internship and passing exams.
  • Chiropractic has been practiced since the late 1890s. It is considered one of the safest approaches to treating patients that is offered today and a good choice for people with conditions including: back or neck pain, digestive issues, headaches, injuries and neuromusculoskeletal complaints.

If your life is afflicted by numbness or tingling in the arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet or toes then you will be interested in this clinical study that showed…

How Patients Significantly Improved Their Sharp Pains, Grip Strength, and Eliminated Numbness and Tingling Without Drugs or Surgery

Dr. Matthew Posa, D.C.

Numbness, tingling, and pain affects all parts of your life

Numbness and tingling is a huge problem which affects every part of your life from sleeping, sitting or walking.  The thought of getting a good night sleep or playing with your kids or grandchildren may seem like a pipe dream because your arms or legs are in too much pain and may even be weak.

Maybe you’re frustrated because you’ve been told that you have to live with it as all the medical testing indicates that you shouldn’t have a problem. Or maybe you’re even fearful because the only options left are drugs with heavy side effects or surgery.

I can tell you one thing…… you are not alone. Millions of people suffer from some form of peripheral neuropathy which can be caused by different things. It is described by webmd.com as a condition that results when nerves from the brain and spinal cord which carry messages to and from the rest of the body are damaged or diseased.

This condition obstructs the nerve signals that control your muscles, joints, connective tissues and organs and if ignored could lead to more serious complications.

“I feel like I’m 30 years older than I actually am.  I can’t walk great distances without pain.  My hands go numb while doing the simplest activities like watching tv or lying in bed.  I am tired of living this way.”

More Pills Are Not the Solution

I have been helping hundreds people with nerve related conditions for over 6 years. I want to let you know that there is hope and you do have another option in Chiropractic that has been proven effective in removing pressure on the nerves without drugs or surgery.

There have been many clinical studies which have demonstrated the benefit of chiropractic and nerve conditions:

Patients showed an 85.5% resolution of the nerve symptoms after only 9 chiropractic treatments. – Journal of Chiropractic Medicine 2008

With chiropractic care, patients had “significant improvement in perceived comfort and function, nerve conduction and finger sensation overall.” – JMPT 1998

“Significant increase in grip strength and normalization of motor and sensory latencies were noted. Orthopedic tests were negative. Symptoms dissipated.” – JMPT 1994

What these studies mean is that there is hope for you to get your life back.

Where should you start?

b2ap3_thumbnail_nerves.jpg

Finding the cause of your neuropathy is where you should start. Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to identify the causes of neuropathic conditions and if your case is beyond the scope of chiropractic you would be referred to the appropriate health professional.  However, often these conditions are caused by a degeneration or misalignment of the spine called Subluxation which can interfere with the nerves that leave your spine and travel to anywhere in the body.  This pressure can arise from the bones or intervertebral discs anywhere on the spine from the base of the head down to the tail bone.

Whether you have been to a chiropractor before or this would be your first experience, you may be wondering what to expect with us.  We want you to understand everything about your case and our procedures before we get started.  Our exams are thorough and our patients describe our techniques as “gentle and effective”.  We have many techniques that we can use to ensure that you are comfortable without hindering the results of your care and progress.

The goal is to release pressure on the nerves to allow your body to heal.

The first step is to have us investigate your problem.  We know that you may have tried everything else without success but this could the answer to your nerve problems.  We hear this from many patients…

“I wish I had found you sooner”

Your life could change for the better.  It’s time to start your body on the right path towards living normally again.  Watch your mobility improve, muscles relax and your pain ease up.

If you or someone you know is suffering, don't hesitate to call us at 905-864-1516 or send us an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will answer your questions.

Many people are surprised when I talk about chiropractic care for babies. Some may even cringe at the thought of a chiropractor adjusting a baby because they’re thinking: “Is chiropractic safe for babies?” or “Do babies get adjusted the same way as adults?”

Have you ever seen a new born get checked by a chiropractor? Here's Dr. Matthew Posa from The Healthy Family Chiropractic in Milton

These are valid questions. In short, YES chiropractic is safe for babies/newborns with chiropractors who have been trained in pediatric chiropractic techniques. And NO, babies do not get adjusted the same way as adults. A baby’s joints are more cartilaginous than bony and only require about the same amount of pressure as you would use to check the ripeness of a tomato. The birth process can be traumatic for an infant so I’m a strong believer in ALL babies getting checked by a chiropractor. In many cases, infant spinal misalignments may not present any visible symptoms until later on in life. However, there are 3 visible signs that babies may show to indicate they need to get checked by a chiropractor:

1. Colic

There are many new parents who have a baby who is colicky. This can be a very difficult time for many parents because of the feeling of helplessness. The causes of colic can be from gassiness to abdominal pains to reflux. In essence, the newborn is experiencing some type of symptom and the only way they know how to express their pain is by crying.

A chiropractor can determine if a spinal misalignment is causing the newborn to be in a state of discomfort. Trained chiropractors can detect spinal misalignments with a thorough examination and correct the misalignment with a safe and gentle adjustment to the spine. A study has shown that spinal adjustments can decrease the number of hours a baby is colic by 2.7 hours per day compared to the medicated group which decreased colic by 1 hour per day.(1) The authors of the study also add that as the study went on, the chiropractic group continued to see improvements. Another study with 316 colicky infants showed that through chiropractic care, 94% of them had improvement.(2) More recently, this study concluded, “chiropractic manual therapy improved crying behavior in infants with colic”.(3)

2. Favours turning head to the left or the right

If your newborn prefers to keep their head turned to either the left or the right, it is a clear sign that the infant has a misalignment in their upper neck area. One tell-tale sign of this is if the newborn favours one breast over the other while breastfeeding. While this child may not have any overt symptoms such as being colicky, it is wise to ensure this child has his or her spine checked from a preventative standpoint to correct any underlying problem that may arise in the future.

3. Reflux

Reflux among newborns is not uncommon, but consistent and constant reflux should be addressed because the underlying problem may be due to a spinal misalignment. A spinal misalignment may cause dysfunction of the esophageal muscles leading to reflux and in more serious cases GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Some signs and symptoms of GERD include interrupted sleep, excessive gas, vomiting, excessive crying, and difficulty breastfeeding. In a recent case study, the authors conclude: “pediatric patients suffering from gastrointestinal disorder such as GERD may benefit from clinical adjustments to sites of vertebral subluxations.”(4)

As a father of two beautiful girls, who both got their first chiropractic adjustments within hours of being born, the spinal health of infants and children is particularly close to my heart. While these are just 3 visible signs your baby needs to get checked by a chiropractor trained in pediatric techniques, I can’t stress enough that ALL babies will benefit from getting checked.

Our modern digital age has brought us many conveniences. BlackBerry devices, iPhones, tablets and e-readers allow us to communicate and be entertained with the push of a button. Technology can improve our quality of life, but it comes with a price: being huddled over devices for long period of times can do more harm than good.

Using certain devices for extended periods of time can easily lead to neck strain, headaches, and pain in the shoulders, arms and hands.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Screen-Shot-2017-06-04-at-7.05.07-PM.png

Anyone who has used a cellphone or tablet for an extensive amount of time has probably experienced the peculiar strain it puts on your upper body. These conditions even have their own name now: Text Neck.

Here are some simple strategies to help shut down text neck strain:

Take frequent breaks

Taking frequent breaks and looking up from your device can provide your neck with some relief from the pressure of looking down.

Sit up straight

It is important to sit up straight while texting. This way you can maintain good posture, relieving your back and shoulders from the strain of being hunched over.

Hold the phone a little higher

Holding the phone closer to eye level helps maintain a healthy posture and puts less strain on the neck.

Stretch

Be sure to stretch often between long periods of extended use of devices. You can rotate your shoulders with your arms by your sides to relieve tension. You can also tuck your chin down to your neck and then look up – this helps to relieve some of the tension in your neck built from the common forward-down position you adopt when looking at your device.

Get Adjusted

Only 10% of the population currently has a regular chiropractic visit. Ensuring your spine is healthy and in proper alignment is the most important step towards avoiding pains and strains.

The purpose of chiropractic is to locate and correct spinal subluxations. A subluxation is when a bone is out of alignment disrupting normal nerve function and reducing mental impulse.

Your brain holds ALL LIFE and that LIFE must travel through the nervous system to each tissue cell. This is normal function. When a subluxation occurs, we have altered nerve impulse and therefore decrease LIFE. Each person replaces cells in their body at a rate of 2.5 million cells/minute. What kind of a body will you have next year? Next year your body will be different. Your blood cells replace themselves every 12-15 days, heart cells in 4 months, internal organs in 6 months, muscles in 9 months, physical body in a year and finally skeletal system in 7 years.

We also know that there is an innate intelligence that travels throughout the body. That innate intelligence is the same intelligence that made the body. This intelligence that runs through your body creates matter (cells) from energy (food). Your physical body is a result of this intelligence using energy to create matter. If we interfere with the intelligence, no matter what energy we are putting in, we are going to disturb the quality of matter. As a result of subluxation, the body replaces itself with abnormal cells. Now we have a collection of abnormal cells being created in the body by the body. Not created from the outside-in but from the inside-out. Abnormal is being created by the body because the very thing that created the body is being disturbed.

b2ap3_thumbnail_2ee77ef67db876700eafa4e11eb59f41.jpg

The body is building itself abnormally and this can take place over a period of years. A subluxation can be there for 5, 10, 15, 20 years. It takes a long time for normal cells to replace themselves with abnormal cells and create disease.

For example, we know that it takes 2.5 years before you get a clinical manifestation of heart disease. But the subluxation had to be there first in order for the abnormal cells to be present. These abnormal cells in the heart were there from the inception of the subluxation. But nobody has any early signs of heart disease being formed. Cancer takes approximately 5 years to develop and most degenerative diseases start 5-15 years before symptoms. Abnormal is created in the body not out of the body. Not because you are allergic to someone or something but simply because your body is no longer receiving the maximum intelligence and thereby creating itself abnormally.

If it continues to create itself abnormally over time it develops the thing that man has called DISEASE. Man then names that disease with a clinical manifestation and a category based on where it is and the affected tissues.

If the world only understood this law of nature. We have abnormal cells being created as a result of subluxation. After the abnormal and damage comes SYMPTOMS. So the symptoms come after abnormal and damage. If you don’t believe me, take a hammer and hit your big toe and tell me if its hurts before or after. First comes the damage then comes the pain.

b2ap3_thumbnail_BJ1.jpgThe world views health much differently than chiropractic does. If you have a symptom, treat it. If you have a symptom you are sick. If you don’t have a symptom you are healthy. It is the biggest lie there is causing more people to suffer and never reach their true health potential. If I can get a patient who hurt their back yesterday understand that their back pain is actually a result of abnormal from 10-15 years ago then I have served that patient with a knowledge and understanding that far exceeds current thinking.

If chiropractic was truly about treating symptoms, the truth is drugs do a much better job and are much cheaper. But the crisis in health care today is caused from the treatment of symptom with an understanding that once the symptom is gone, that person is healthy. That person is still left with the subluxation. They still have creation of abnormal cells, still have disease, and still have damage.

Our world needs to hear this message more than ever before. The purpose of chiropractic is the restoration of normal mental impulses for maximum connection to innate intelligence.

What would you want your body to be able to do extremely well in order to achieve health?

Your brain is constantly sending specific information to each cell in your body. When the signal is clear, we call this EASE. In order to be a self-regulating, self-healing organism, this EASE must be maintained because it allows the brain to know what is happening and how it should respond. One of the most amazing aspects of your body is the ability to maintain a status of equilibrium and ease. In biology, the term for this is Homeostasis. Even more amazing is the fact that your body can maintain ease and homeostasis while exposed to negative Toxins, Thoughts and Trauma’s daily as long as this is within your body’s ability for adaptation.

What’s even more amazing is that a specific chiropractic adjustment on a specific vertebra can remove the stress that is compressing the neuro-activity of the body. By releasing the Subluxation, we restore the balance and EASE within your body so you can withstand daily stress’s. In other words, you can ADAPT to your environment without losing EASE or Homeostasis as long as your nervous system stays clear.

Chiropractic is awesome! Less stress, more ease and better adaptation. But what if we went a step further. Not only is your body communicating at 100% but the information that is sent is upgraded. It’s like going from regular TV to 4K. Same TV show, same information, just better and much clearer picture. Your body can now think more clearly.

If I had to design a body to be healthy, I would want it to self-heal, regenerate, fight infections and harmful pathogens, adapt to its environment, process information optimally. Do all that while keeping a state of ease and homeostasis. Your body is designed to be healthy, it just needs no interference.

What’s sad is most people still think chiropractic is about back pain. If only they knew what really goes on during an adjustment.

I love you and here for you 100%,

Dr. Matt

Recent research has shown that the earth and all living things resonate at a high frequency and tone. Healthy cells vibrate at high vibrations and tone while diseased/sick cells vibrate at low frequency and low tone. When cells vibrate at high frequency they exhibit strong health and are in tune with the innate intelligence that flows through all matter. Interruption to the flow of innate intelligence causes cells to vibrate at low frequencies which disconnects living matter from its source.

The word SUB-LUX-ATION (Sub = Less than, Lux = Light/Frequency/Flow) is a condition that interferes and is a major disruptor to the innate flow of life. Subluxations alter the flow of all LIFE that runs over all the nerves in the body and results in low vibrational tones. The CAUSE of all disease is altered expression of normal high vibrational tone.

This is why it is so important to ensure you continue to engage in high vibrational activities, thoughts and foods. Exercise, positive thoughts/actions and good nutrition all vibrate at high frequency and are in tune with the natural law of the universe.  They are the fuel your body needs in order to express health. Since the presence of normal tone prevents subluxations from occurring, the chiropractic adjustment and healthy lifestyle habits are necessary to ensure you continue to express your full potential.

Chiropractic does not cure and it certainly does not heal. YOUR BODY DOES and has everything it needs to be healthy. Chiropractic is the assessment application of what allows man to thrive by the removal of interference to the normal vibrational tone of life. Life runs from the source to each cell; uninterrupted it exudes the ultimate expression of life. It ensures we resonate at high frequency so we can be in tune with universal intelligence which runs through us. Chiropractic allows for the expression of life from Above Down Inside Out.

It is my sole purpose to see you re-connected to your full health potential. Start thinking healthy spine = Healthy life and be the best you possible. The world needs you and your gifts.

When our brain senses harm either from a traumatic/repetitive injury, stressful/negative thought or exposure to a toxins in the air, water, food or environment (aka. The THREE T’s), it shifts into protection mode—the fight-or-flight response (Sympathetic/Stress Response). The brain notes the body’s level of harm and determines whether we should be in fight-or-flight mode or if we have the “all clear” and can invest energy in growth and repair.

Our entire body is hardwired neurologically to respond to these signals one way or another: We cannot be both in GROWTH/HEALING and PROTECTION at the same time. While stressful mental activity includes negative, angry, fearful or depressed thoughts, physical traumas and toxic exposures represent influence the same centers of the brain as these mental thoughts do.

As you can imagine, we can be consciously aware of being angry, feeling nauseous from something we smell, or feeling pain from an injury, but an abundance of subconscious signals from these same circumstances reach the following key areas of the brain: the hippocampus (the center for learning), the amygdala (the stress and anxiety center), and the hypothalamus (the neuroendocrine control center, which initiates a cascade of events preparing us for fight or flight).

To give you an idea of the amount of signals detected by our brain each second, according to Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., we are able to perceive 40 bits of information consciously each second. In that time, 20,000,000 (yes, 20 million!) bits reach the brain subconsciously. Being that the majority of this input is subconscious, by definition you are not aware of it! Clearly, then, the quality of this abundant information profoundly influences the brain’s function.

Chiropractic adjustments, exercise, daily nutrient intake, and positive and loving thoughts contribute to creating high-quality input to the nervous system. This constructive input enhances healing, growth and balanced function. Health really boils down to homeostasis (balanced function) at the cellular level. To create a lifetime of health that can survive like D.D. Palmer’s principles, we must provide our bodies with optimal input throughout our lives.

Adjustments stop subconscious negative signals and brings the body into a state of ease thus allowing for a balanced state and therefore normal functioning of the entire body. Living a life in balance is the key to optimal health.

I love you and I'm here for you 100%.

Be Blessed,

It’s great to be back!!! I’m so excited for the direction the clinic is heading and in the next few months massive changes will take place to ensure we provide the best chiropractic in the world. During the march break I was really focused on 2 main things. First, I worked hard in implementing new strategies to help more people understand chiropractic and to move the clinic closer towards my vision of serving more people. Each week I will be doing a 5 minute Facebook live show (click here for link) to answer common questions people have. BUT…I need your help with this one. In the next couple weeks, we will be handing out question forms and I really want your toughest questions about chiropractic and health. I will be answering questions LIVE every Tuesday at Noon. Make sure to watch, comment and share. Second, I wanted to have fun, so my wife and I went to Iceland. What a beautiful country! I highly recommend you visit and cross this place off your bucket list.

While away, I was able to catch up on some reading. In 1910,  D.D. Palmer identified the causes of vertebral subluxation as the Three T’s— thoughts, trauma and toxins. Since that time, we have expanded our understanding of how these factors impact our body’s function, but the basic concepts Palmer laid down for the profession he founded have survived the test of time.

 b2ap3_thumbnail_Three-Ts.png

What we understand now is that subluxation is more than a spinal bone out of place and pinching a nerve, as was once thought. A subluxation involves changes throughout the nervous system by changing how the brain perceives the body. In Chiropractic we call this dis-ease. This is why subluxations cause so many different side effects such as: chronic tight muscles, ear aches, headaches, anxiety, heart issues, constipation, infections, sleeplessness, poor development in kids, skin conditions…on and on.

So how do the Three T’s cause subluxation and affect the function of the nervous system as a whole? Let’s start with physical trauma, since most people can resonate with that. It is easy to understand how a vertebra can become misaligned as a result of physical trauma to the spine—forceful birthing procedures that pull and twist a baby’s head to expedite the delivery process, falls endured while learning how to walk, playground injuries, bad posture, increased technology use, car accidents, falls etc. The body will logically try to stabilise this area with muscle splinting, which will heal in this configuration unless something is done to restore integrity to the area. Today, repeated poor health habits and static postural loading cause more subluxation than anything else.

The body can Subluxate's with chemical exposure and emotional stresses. The nervous system perceives these non-physical stressors to be threatening and directs the muscles to react, defend and brace the body, holding bones in positions that can cause asymmetry and imbalance in the spine. No muscle moves a bone without a nerve purposefully telling it to do so. These misalignment's and alterations in spinal curvature are only a result of the internal, neurological response to the overwhelming presence of the Three T’s.

The Adjustment restores BALANCE to the nervous system so your body can FUNCTION, HEAL and REPAIR the way it was designed. Everyone deserves a clear nervous system so they can be the best version of themselves. This is the gift of Chiropractic to the world and this is my God-Given purpose. Please comment, ask questions, share this with others. I will always personally answer any questions you have.

I love you and I’m all in for you 100%.

Be blessed,

Dr. Matt

One of the most important aspects of chiropractic care is understanding subluxation and why everyone from newborns to 95 year old grand parents need to be under care. Truthfully, If I only had to take care of one person in the family, it would be the YOUNGEST. Growing healthy children is much easier than fixing injured adults.

Some of you may have seen a Facebook post where students asked the effects of stress over time and the teacher used a water bottle to help explain. Since Subluxation is the most dangerous stress you can have, I believe it is pivotal to understand how it applies to you and your health.

 b2ap3_thumbnail_mhAWyRK.jpg

Imagine I gave you a bottle of water and asked you to hold it in your hands with your arm stretched out. Then I asked you how much it weighs. What would you say? 1 lbs, .5 lbs, 2 lbs?  The truth is, it doesn’t matter. What matters is how long you hold onto the bottle. If you hold the bottle of water for 1 minute, you will probably not notice the weight. If I hold it for 5 minutes your arm will start to feel tired and heavy. If you held it for 15 minutes your fingers would probably go numb and if you did it for an hour you probably would lose complete function in your arm and strain the supporting muscles.

The way we need to view subluxation is quite simple. Subluxations are correctable but what truly matters is how long it has been there. The longer it has been there, the more impact (weight) it has on your body. Subluxations are only detectable by those trained to detect it and you will never hear from your medical doctor about something they are not trained in. b2ap3_thumbnail_subluxation.jpg

Research confirms subluxation is not a bone pressing on a nerve. Research has shown the body is smarter than that (duh) and will go into a defense mechanism. When a certain spinal vertebrae Subluxates, the nerves around that segment and the spinal cord directly behind it begins to shrink so that nothing will press on it. However, this is meant to be a short term (adaptive) solution. If undetected and not adjusted, the longer it stays that way, the greater the impact to the body. This is why it does not cause a symptom and if symptoms are present, we have a much bigger problem on our hands.

Subluxations are truly a silent killer. They do not press on nerves, they cause the body to alter its state to avoid any structures pressing on it. The brain then enters a stressful (sympathetic) response. In this stressed and altered state, your ability to self regulate, produce hormones, drugs, healing, repair, function, think..etc are directly affected. Left undetected for days, weeks, months, years will all have varying effects on your health from headaches, tight muscles, anxiety, diabetes, blood pressure (insert symptom or disease here). It all comes down to how long it has been there. The higher in the spine the Subluxation the greater the altered physiology.

 b2ap3_thumbnail_Vertebral-Subluxation-Chiropractic-web-image-e14407757884971-1024x742.png

Getting your spine checked and adjusted for Subluxation is the most powerful health choice you have made. How long Subluxation has been there will not only determine how long it will take to correct it but also how severe of an impact it will have. Health is our greatest asset. Being proactive and not reactive means you give your brain the ability to fight disease before it consumes you.

“As the twig bends, so grows the tree” – What Alexander Pope meant by this quote was that problems that arise in childhood carry through into adulthood.

Most new patients don’t realize that The Healthy Family Chiropractic Milton provides care for not only adults, but also infants and children.  As soon as a new baby is born, the spine begins to undergo stress and irregularities may occur.  It’s extremely important that these issues are corrected as soon as possible so they don’t develop into major problems as we get older.

During childbirth, pressure is placed on the nerves and nervous system. Even when we think about an uncomplicated labour, doctors normally pull on the baby’s head and neck to help move the birthing process along. Over 90% of misalignments in the spine are caused by childbirth (including in adults).

A study found that trauma to the spine during childbirth was the cause of nearly 85% of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It was also discovered that approximately 80% of children have misalignments in their upper neck, which is known to cause susceptibility to infection, recurrent cold and flu, ear troubles, tonsillitis, just to name a few.  Not to worry, research has shown that chiropractic adjustments that work to correct these misalignments initiate a faster immune response than antibiotic treatments do.

Scoliosis, a condition where there is abnormal curvature of the spine, can begin to develop when subluxations (spinal misalignments affecting the nerves) from childhood are left uncorrected. Subluxations can occur from things you may not expect, such as a diaper that has been fastened too tight, since it doesn’t allow for natural hip movement. Placing your baby in a Jolly-Jumper can cause undue stress to their underdeveloped spinal discs. Tossing a small child in the air as a form of entertainment can actually do more harm to the child than good; it can cause a whiplash motion on the spine, which is detrimental to the nervous system.  Subluxations also occur with more obvious traumas as well, such as a fall or a hit during a sporting event.

Image result for christmas tree scoliosis

When left uncorrected, these misalignments or subluxations in the spine can act as a poorly built foundation causing a long life of evolving issues, such as spinal disc degeneration, arthritis, development of abnormal calcium deposits and instable ligaments surrounding the vertebrae.

What is the quality of your life and health?  How do stresses in life affect your health? How is the health of others around you? Could it be better?

If you want to have a higher quality of health, the new year may be the opportune time to reassess your life and make some very important and life changing decisions.

Many people believe that the older they get, the less beneficial it becomes, to drop bad habits and start good ones.  This is simply not true.  It is never too late to adopt a healthy lifestyle.  Whether your body is 2 months old or 82 years old, it will always function at its maximum efficiency when you eat well, exercise regularly, and keep your nerve system free from interference caused by vertebral subluxations.

Ageing causes the structures that hold the spine in proper alignment to undergo change.  The muscles that support and move the vertebrae of the spinal column begin to lose their tone. This can result in a greater tendency for spinal vertebrae to subluxate, or “slip out of line”, losing their normal mobility.   This process creates interference with the communication pathways through the nerve system which is so vital for good health. By adjusting the spine, we restore the body’s ability to govern itself optimally.

If you understand this next part you will understand everything there is to know about health and healing. Your body, when it's working the way it was designed can last until 120-150 years old. But the individual cells don’t last 120 years. If I brush my hand, I will brush off millions of dead cells and new ones grow from behind in order to replace them. Your body constantly replaces itself at the rate of 3 billion cells every 20 seconds! As you read this right now your heart cells are dying but don't worry about it because your body is making new cells to replace it out of the food you ate today. Heart cells live about 90 days and then they die, red blood cells live about 120 days and then die and replaced. After 14 months go by, all your organs have been replaced. It takes about 7 years to replace the entire body, bones and all. Every 7 years you have a brand new body. That means if you have been married for 21 years, you are on your 3rd spouse by now. (That was a joke!)

Your entire body replaces itself with new cells as old cells die off except for one system. Can you guess? Your brain and spinal cord. Those cells have to last you your entire life. The brain and spinal cord are the first cells to form, they are the master controls cells that regulate the entire body and the only cells that will last a life time.

Do you think it might be a good idea to take care of your brain and spinal cord?

That's the Chiropractic message. That’s all we want you to do. We say since every part of your body can be replaced and since your brain and spinal cord, if they are working properly, regulate the function of the entire body then you only really have to worry about one system. If the new cells in your body is getting clear information from your brain and spinal cord and form strong and healthy then disease passes from the picture. That's why patients under chiropractic care for more than 7 years are statistically the healthiest patients in our office. But if the new cells that are born are born just as sick as the old ones, then the disease goes on and on and you will never get well.

This is why Chiropractic is so important and why so many people don’t understand it. Everyone else is trying to help all the sick cells in the body. Chiropractic doesn’t want to cure your sick cells, we  just wants to make sure all the new cells that are being born are born healthy.

As we move into another year of our lives, it is very important to take a bit of time to sit down and reassess where we are heading with our health and our goals of enjoying our health now and later in life.  We must realise that if we procrastinate with our health now, we may not be able to enjoy the rest of our lives the way we desire.

The people who have been caught in a bad health scenario for a long time should realise that the vast majority of the health problems could improve greatly with a natural and holistic approach to health.  A lot of these people get caught up on a treadmill of drug taking.  They only mask symptoms temporarily and inevitably allowing their body to slowly be dragged in a downward spiral of health, creating the need for more drugs.

We are in control of our own destiny.  It is never too late for NEW BEGINNINGS. Tell others, let them read this or even better, give them the gift of health. Who wouldn’t want a $400 gift card? Especially if they have never had a proper spinal check up. Just imagine if you were responsible for improving someone’s life, getting them off drugs and living the life they were designed to live, simply because you gave them the opportunity with a free health gift card.

I want to share with you a verse I read daily. It keeps me motivated and focused on my WHY.

“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” Hebrews 6:10 (NIV)

Together, we can change our community by giving hope and healing to thousands.

It's time to think Christmas Strategy.

Unfortunately during this time of the year because of time constraints, people being busy, financial stress, parties, bad foods, more booze etc..  it more often than not is one of the most stressful times of the year. More people get sick during Christmas and January than any other time in the year.

Here are my 7 AWESOME Steps to Christmas Success

1. Pro-Actively Pre-Eat: Before you go to Christmas functions, dinners and parties and indulge in foods you don't normally eat (SUGAR), eat a few hours before something nutritious before you go. This will decrease the tendency for you to want to eat more food and ensure you are getting proper nutrition.

2. Stay Continually Hydrated: People often think they are hungry when in fact they are dehydrated. Especially in kids. Staying hydrated is not only good for you it will ensure your appetite stays in control.

3. Don't skip on your workout. Your workout is as much as a mind set thing as it is a physical thing. Exercise breaks stress, oxygenates your cells and this gives life to your tissues. If you skip your workout you often tend to skip-out on other things too. Stick to it and be committed, consistency is key.

4. Steer Clear of the Sugar. Sugar is proven to reduce the function of your nervous system which reduces your immune system. Sugar feeds disease cells. Bacterial and Cancer cells LOVE sugar.

5. Don't hang out near the bad stuff. Out of sight, out of mind. Don't park yourself beside the bar or beside the sweets table.

6. Rest Up. We typically get this wrong and do it backwards. When we are the most busy, we need the most rest. Take a small 15-20 min nap if you need to. Deadlines, late nights, parties, extra work all add up to less rest.

7. Take the time to be Merry and Joyful. This is so so so important. This is one of the relationships time of the year. Do not let stress and being caught up in pointless things rob you of joy. Surround yourself with loved ones and celebrate life.

When we need Health the most, we often bail on it the most. These strategies will keep you pointed in the right direction so that you can live the life you were Designed to live.

From all of us at the healthy family to you and your family, we love being part of your lives and on your journey towards true health. Have a wonderful Merry Christmas and a happy new year. God bless,

Dr. Matthew Posa DC

How are you feeling? Especially after the elections last week, it seems that’s all everyone was talking about. I logged onto Facebook and I had to turn it off, it was crazy. The radio was driving me nuts and in just 5 weeks it’s Christmas! If you are not already stressed, then I probably just made you a little more stressed. YOUR WELCOME! I want to give you some really HUGE stress reduction tips that I know will help you leading into Christmas and the new year.

Studies show us unequivocally that stress is all about the nervous system (Brain and Spinal Cord) and its ability to adapt and deal with every day stresses.

1.    Chiropractic adjustments: When you hear that “pop” your spinal cord and specifically Lamina 7 is stimulated and synapses (triggers) your brain to immediately stop stress response (Cortisol and other hormones) and immediately initiates a healing response. The adjustment stops destructive and negative processes and starts life-giving and building

2.    Movement: When you engage into activities (Yoga, Walking, Exercise, Weight-Lifting, etc.) you are moving and mobilizing your spine, you are reducing tension throughout your body, it helps to relax muscles but most importantly research shows it helps to pump and circulate cerebral-spinal fluid (CSF) around your spine and brain. CSF is responsible for 90% of the nutrition to your brain. If you have ever gone for a 30 min walk or gone to yoga, you feel very relaxed afterwards. It’s because you helped moved the CSF around your body and gave your brain the nutrition it needs.

3.    Renewing your mind: Having something you can rely on that helps keep you motivated and thinking positive. This is a must have and a proven life changing strategy. Everyone needs something to keep them thinking positive. Recent studies have found those who create a list by adding one thing you are greateful for each morning for a month had the best and most positive changes in their lives. Being grateful and acknowledging blessings in your life changes the hormones in your brain. Oxytocin and Serotonin are naturally released in the highest amounts when you are 1. grateful and 2. when you hug or do something for someone else without expectations of something in return.

Find a book that is motivational, inspirational, and hope giving. Keep the book on your night stand. Every night before going to bed, read for 5-10 mins and let those positive and encouraging thoughts fuel your mind as you sleep and repair.

Books I recommend:

Limitless by Jentzen Franklin

Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown

Last week TMZ reported that playboy model Katie May died after chiropractor 'tore open artery while manipulating' neck injury she incurred on photo shoot.

I am a Chiropractor and I want everyone to know the truth before they start pointing fingers or worse, people not getting care that can help them.

- Katie May did suffer a neck injury while on a photo shoot before visiting a chiropractor.
- She was experiencing pains such as neck pain, arm numbness and tingling before she went to the chiropractor
- She did not feel better after going to the chiropractor

It pains me to see someone so young pass away from a stroke. It is important that everyone knows that science has proven that a Chiropractor cannot cause a stroke. It is not possible by the way we do things today and with all the training we have. I will agree after being adjusted my entire life that I did not like all the chiropractors I saw or the style of adjustments I received but that doesn't mean Chiropractic is not safe and it doesn't work.

Here are some important sings and symptoms associated with a stroke:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
  • The Key word is sudden. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms please go to your nearest emergency department right away. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Why are people linking chiropractic and stroke? This is what the best research has to say:
- The neck pain or headaches from a dissected cervical artery cause patients to schedule a visit with a chiropractor for pain relief.
- The dissected vertebral artery is already present before the adjustment takes place. And that’s why so many draw fast conclusions that an adjustment caused it.

Links to Research (not opinion papers):

1. http://www.cureus.com/articles/4155-systematic-review-and-meta-analysis-of-chiropractic-care-and-cervical-artery-dissection-no-evidence-for-causation

2. http://journals.lww.com/spinejournal/Abstract/2008/02151/Risk_of_Vertebrobasilar_Stroke_and_Chiropractic.19.aspx

4. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25494315

And this last research article will surprise you...they concluded “those who were under the care of a Chiropractor had less strokes than those under a primary care physician.”

Chiropractic is not only very safe, thousands of lives are being saved from over 2 million adjustments done every day around the world. The probability of someone having a major issue is 1 in 4.2 Million. Chiropractic has been around for over 121 years and in that time only a hand full of these types of conditions have presented. Nobody makes a stink when 2000 kids die every year from taking Tylenol.

If you are suffering and want help, we can help and rest assured, IT IS SAFE. Chiropractors are loving and caring people, who wake up every day excited to help others. We are highly trained and love to serve our patients with the highest level of health care available.

Yes some people hate the sound or to watch people get adjusted but that does not make it unsafe.

What you need to know is that not all chiropractors are the same. In our office, the care and concern of our patients is our absolute priority. All patients undergo extensive tests including x-ray to determine the cause of their concern and to allow us to be extremely precise. Only once we have carefully reviewed your examination findings and come up with a treatment plan do we proceed with specific chiropractic adjustments and correction. We do not gamble with people's lives. For more information visit our website at www.thehealthyfamily.ca or call us at 905-864-1516.

God bless everyone,

I want to share with you a great article by a great chiropractor in Ottawa and someone I look up to, Dr. Paul Groulx. He put together some NON-SURGICAL DIY tips to help with neck pain and back pain relief that I know will help you and others.  Ottawa, just like Milton, is filled with people who work at a desk all day long.

As a Chiropractor I see people with neck pain and back pain every day and all of them need back pain relief.

Most of it comes from postures they are subjected to while working at the most common jobs.

The desk job.

Even if you’re someone who would normally have a great posture (by your Chiropractor’s standard), you spend so many hours seated at a desk, your posture starts to collapse, your pelvis tilts forward, your head drops forward and you’re sitting at a computer for hours a day, week after week, year after year.2016-09-17_2048

Even when you are standing that translates into a posture where your shoulders are rolled forward, your head’s forward, your pelvis is dropped forward.

That can tend to create this ugly looking tummy that doesn’t actually exist, but it just looks like it does. It’s all about the posture.

The first thing we need to stretch are something called “hip flexors”. There’s a muscle that goes between your thigh and your spine that gets shortened over time.

The first step is to show you how to stretch out your hip flexor.

What you can try to do is something called a “simple lunge.” 2016-09-17_2050

The stretch you’re going to feel is going to be all in through your thigh and into the front of your hip.

You may find that as you’re doing this, it’s hard to balance, so you just use the table or a chair beside you.

Hold the stretch for 30-45 seconds.

Couple of mistakes I want you to watch out for:

1.  Your knee should never drop forward in front of your toes.  You want to keep knee over your ankle.

2.  There’s a tendency to go rest on your leg by bending forward on your forward leg.

Although that seems appealing, it tends to round out the back, and actually leads to more back problems.

You’ll notice that as you do this, not only is it a good stretch, but your opposite leg is going to really burn as well!

The next stretch is to stretch out your “glutes”.

2016-09-17_2104

Start from a seated position.

Before we bend forward, really the first step is to lengthen your thoracic spine.

2016-09-17_2101 Take one leg and you’re going to cross it over  the other as though you would casually sit on a chair.

Bend forward, but don’t bend forward by rounding your back out.  Hinge at the hips.

Lift up your rib cage, keep your head straight, and just start to bring your chest down towards your leg.

  1. I want you to hold that for 30 to 45 seconds each time. Come up slowly, keeping your back straight.

  2. Repeat for the other leg.

The best time to do this is after you’re already warmed up.  Generally speaking, it’s not a good idea to do any kind of stretch on a cold muscle.  You’re asking for more injuries.

Next is a very simple “bridge” exercise to tone your “glutes”, as well as your lower back.

2016-09-17_2123 2016-09-17_2122

Start on your back, activate (flex) your glutes and bend your knees to a 90 degree angle, keeping your knees together.

Raise your bum right up off the table. That strengthens the glutes and the lower back.

You can hold that for anywhere between 10 and 30 seconds.

You can do ten, fifteen repetitions, until you start to feel like your muscles have been activated.

The last exercise I’m going to teach you is actually how to pull your shoulders back. If you’re seated at a computer and your head is forward, and you want to start pulling your head back, you will quickly realize that you can’t just pull your head back because your shoulders are pulled forward, blocking your head from being pulled back.

The first step in getting your head pulled back, is actually to get your shoulders pulled back.  Only then, are you able to correct the posture in your upper spine.

To do this you will need to master the “Y-T-W” exercise.

The first exercise is to lay on your belly and make the letter “Y” with your arms. Pull your arms up off the floor  which will pull your shoulder blades together. That’s the letter Y. 2016-09-17_2127

Now you can move that down to a letter “T”, squeezing the shoulder blades together and lifting the arms up as high as you can without overextending it too much.

2016-09-17_2128

Then, pull down into a letter “W”. When you pull the letter “W”, the arms come down. That’s pulling the bottom of your should blades together.

2016-09-17_2128k

Hold each position for up to 10 seconds.

If you find The Y-T-W too much of a challenge, you can try something called “Superman”. “Superman” is when the left arm goes up and the right leg goes up.

What I don’t want you to do is raise your leg so high that you’re compressing your lower back. What I want you to do is just raise it up a little bit and then point your toe.

2016-09-17_2130

Imagine you are reaching for the wall in front of you and reaching for the wall behind you. Now you are activating all of the muscles from your shoulder, down through the spine and into the leg.

Slowly alternate.

These DIY tips for neck pain and back pain relief are approved by your Milton Chiropractor, Dr. Matthew Posa!

Here’s what I’d like you to do next. Share this blog post with people that you think might benefit so they can see the content and get the help that they need. The other thing you can do, leave your questions in the comment section below, and I will answer!

A chiropractic adjustment does so much more than just release a joint, taking tension off of the nerves and muscles.  In fact I’ve heard it said this way:

Going to a chiropractor just for pain relief,

Is like robbing a bank and just stealing the pens!

A 2011 study by 9 doctors using PET scan technology (neuro-imaging technique) found that ONE CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT did the following:

1. Sympathetic tone was inhibited (ie. anti-stress effect)

This literally means that your body has a harder time feeling stressed when you get adjusted.  Think about that!   Wow!

2. Salivary amylase was decreased (drop in the feeling of being stressed)

This is a measurement of the type of saliva that is present in someone that is highly stressed.

3. Regional brain metabolic changes (the brain is greatly influenced by the spine)

The metabolism of your brain is altered – it becomes more efficient in its firing (hence your general feeling of more energy) and it quiets down, just like it would in a stress-free environment.

4. Decreased muscle hypertonicity (relaxation of muscles)

The muscles around the neck, shoulders and back all release their tension – even in areas of the spine that weren’t actually touched during the adjustment. This is why for so many of you a proper upper spine adjustment is exactly what is required to release the tension in your lower back.

5. Decreased pain intensity (feeling better)

Pain is a chemical reaction.  The depolarization level of mechanoreceptors and pain receptors are altered to a level that they would be in a stess-free person.

What does this all mean?

This proves that no matter your age, your health, your heritage or your genetics, your SPINAL INTEGRITY will dictate NERVE SYSTEM FUNCTION! Remember HEALTH = OPTIMAL FUNCTION OF YOUR BODY. It is not the absence of symptoms.

Your back is your lifeline.  Your back determines whether or not you are always stressed.

And since stress = death, I’d say that’s pretty important!

I can't thank you enough! Last month was a huge month and I want to thank everyone who participated in our March contest. Your testimonials were very touching to read and I love the feedback. Remember, each and every Progressive Exam you have is a great opportunity for you to express what you are feeling and how you are progressing. Please also take this time let us know on the bottom of the form if there are any areas you believe we can improve. Health is a journey and we are in this together.

We are making some changes to help the flow of the office as we continue to grow. The sign in computer now faces the sign in desk. This is typically where Dr. Denise will be to greet you but also help you with your visit, guide you if you have a progressive exam or share any information with you for that visit. Lisa will be in her typical area but will better be able to help you with your schedule, finances and any other future appointments.

Each week, I will have a special Dr. Matt's Message for that week. I will use this time to discuss any important events but more importantly, share with you some life changing information about the advanced chiropractic care you are receiving and some other important additional health information to help you get the most out of your care.

Did you notice any other changes? We are now happy so provide you with Chlorophyll Water. What is Chlorophyll? This green gem is now popping up in juice bars and in the supplement section on supermarket shelves — in both pill and liquid form — claiming health benefits from weight loss to cancer prevention.

- Cancer: Preliminary research has shown that chlorophyll can help to mitigate the oxidative damage from cancer-causing chemicals and radiation. Chlorophyll forms a complex with the carcinogens that your body has a difficult time absorbing, so your body eliminates these complexes through feces, helping to prevent cancer.
- Liquid chlorophyll also has the ability to bind and remove toxic heavy metals like mercury from your body. Additionally, liquid chlorophyll aids your body in destroying and removing germs and helps to prevent the growth of new germs. Moreover, it is a good and effective source of magnesium that can alkalinize your body. It’s also an antioxidant, preventing harmful oxidation in the body.
- Bad breath? Digestive issues? Topical chlorophyll has been used for decades in clinical settings to help reduce odor from open wounds. From this, doctors began to provide chlorophyll orally to reduce urine and fecal odors; liquid chlorophyll can function as a deodorizer and a promoter of good digestive function.

Remember, health is made up of four main categories. Nutrition, Movement, Thinking and Brain-Body. Which one does chiropractic help? Chiropractic is less about movement and more about brain. 90% of the nutrition to your brain comes from the stimulation and movement of your spine. When there is subluxation, your brain has a difficult time connecting and receiving information from that part of the body which results in altered AFFERENT(signal from body up to the brain) input causing the brain to respond with poor EFFERENT stimulus back to the body. Each adjustment restores balance and therefore nutrition to your brain.

God bless,

Dr. Matt
