How are you feeling? Especially after the elections last week, it seems that’s all everyone was talking about. I logged onto Facebook and I had to turn it off, it was crazy. The radio was driving me nuts and in just 5 weeks it’s Christmas! If you are not already stressed, then I probably just made you a little more stressed. YOUR WELCOME! I want to give you some really HUGE stress reduction tips that I know will help you leading into Christmas and the new year.

 

Studies show us unequivocally that stress is all about the nervous system (Brain and Spinal Cord) and its ability to adapt and deal with every day stresses.

 

1.    Chiropractic adjustments: When you hear that “pop” your spinal cord and specifically Lamina 7 is stimulated and synapses (triggers) your brain to immediately stop stress response (Cortisol and other hormones) and immediately initiates a healing response. The adjustment stops destructive and negative processes and starts life-giving and building

2.    Movement: When you engage into activities (Yoga, Walking, Exercise, Weight-Lifting, etc.) you are moving and mobilizing your spine, you are reducing tension throughout your body, it helps to relax muscles but most importantly research shows it helps to pump and circulate cerebral-spinal fluid (CSF) around your spine and brain. CSF is responsible for 90% of the nutrition to your brain. If you have ever gone for a 30 min walk or gone to yoga, you feel very relaxed afterwards. It’s because you helped moved the CSF around your body and gave your brain the nutrition it needs.

3.    Renewing your mind: Having something you can rely on that helps keep you motivated and thinking positive. This is a must have and a proven life changing strategy. Everyone needs something to keep them thinking positive. Recent studies have found those who create a list by adding one thing you are greateful for each morning for a month had the best and most positive changes in their lives. Being grateful and acknowledging blessings in your life changes the hormones in your brain. Oxytocin and Serotonin are naturally released in the highest amounts when you are 1. grateful and 2. when you hug or do something for someone else without expectations of something in return.

 

Find a book that is motivational, inspirational, and hope giving. Keep the book on your night stand. Every night before going to bed, read for 5-10 mins and let those positive and encouraging thoughts fuel your mind as you sleep and repair.

Last week TMZ reported that playboy model Katie May died after chiropractor 'tore open artery while manipulating' neck injury she incurred on photo shoot. 

I am a Chiropractor and I want everyone to know the truth before they start pointing fingers or worse, people not getting care that can help them.

- Katie May did suffer a neck injury while on a photo shoot before visiting a chiropractor.
- She was experiencing pains such as neck pain, arm numbness and tingling before she went to the chiropractor
- She did not feel better after going to the chiropractor

It pains me to see someone so young pass away from a stroke. It is important that everyone knows that science has proven that a Chiropractor cannot cause a stroke. It is not possible by the way we do things today and with all the training we have. I will agree after being adjusted my entire life that I did not like all the chiropractors I saw or the style of adjustments I received but that doesn't mean Chiropractic is not safe and it doesn't work.

Here are some important sings and symptoms associated with a stroke: 

  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
  • The Key word is sudden. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms please go to your nearest emergency department right away. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Why are people linking chiropractic and stroke? This is what the best research has to say:
- The neck pain or headaches from a dissected cervical artery cause patients to schedule a visit with a chiropractor for pain relief. 
- The dissected vertebral artery is already present before the adjustment takes place. And that’s why so many draw fast conclusions that an adjustment caused it.

And this last research article will surprise you...they concluded “those who were under the care of a Chiropractor had less strokes than those under a primary care physician.”

Chiropractic is not only very safe, thousands of lives are being saved from over 2 million adjustments done every day around the world. The probability of someone having a major issue is 1 in 4.2 Million. Chiropractic has been around for over 121 years and in that time only a hand full of these types of conditions have presented. Nobody makes a stink when 2000 kids die every year from taking Tylenol.

I want to share with you a great article by a great chiropractor in Ottawa and someone I look up to, Dr. Paul Groulx. He put together some NON-SURGICAL DIY tips to help with neck pain and back pain relief that I know will help you and others.  Ottawa, just like Milton, is filled with people who work at a desk all day long.

As a Chiropractor I see people with neck pain and back pain every day and all of them need back pain relief.

Most of it comes from postures they are subjected to while working at the most common jobs.

The desk job.

Even if you’re someone who would normally have a great posture (by your Chiropractor’s standard), you spend so many hours seated at a desk, your posture starts to collapse, your pelvis tilts forward, your head drops forward and you’re sitting at a computer for hours a day, week after week, year after year.2016-09-17_2048

Even when you are standing that translates into a posture where your shoulders are rolled forward, your head’s forward, your pelvis is dropped forward.

That can tend to create this ugly looking tummy that doesn’t actually exist, but it just looks like it does. It’s all about the posture.

The first thing we need to stretch are something called “hip flexors”. There’s a muscle that goes between your thigh and your spine that gets shortened over time.

The first step is to show you how to stretch out your hip flexor.

What you can try to do is something called a “simple lunge.” 2016-09-17_2050

The stretch you’re going to feel is going to be all in through your thigh and into the front of your hip.

You may find that as you’re doing this, it’s hard to balance, so you just use the table or a chair beside you.

Hold the stretch for 30-45 seconds.

Couple of mistakes I want you to watch out for:

1.  Your knee should never drop forward in front of your toes.  You want to keep knee over your ankle.

2.  There’s a tendency to go rest on your leg by bending forward on your forward leg.

Although that seems appealing, it tends to round out the back, and actually leads to more back problems.

You’ll notice that as you do this, not only is it a good stretch, but your opposite leg is going to really burn as well!

The next stretch is to stretch out your “glutes”.

Start from a seated position.

Before we bend forward, really the first step is to lengthen your thoracic spine.

2016-09-17_2101 Take one leg and you’re going to cross it over  the other as though you would casually sit on a chair.

Bend forward, but don’t bend forward by rounding your back out.  Hinge at the hips.

Lift up your rib cage, keep your head straight, and just start to bring your chest down towards your leg.

  1. I want you to hold that for 30 to 45 seconds each time. Come up slowly, keeping your back straight.

  2. Repeat for the other leg.

The best time to do this is after you’re already warmed up.  Generally speaking, it’s not a good idea to do any kind of stretch on a cold muscle.  You’re asking for more injuries.

Next is a very simple “bridge” exercise to tone your “glutes”, as well as your lower back.

Start on your back, activate (flex) your glutes and bend your knees to a 90 degree angle, keeping your knees together.

Raise your bum right up off the table. That strengthens the glutes and the lower back.

You can hold that for anywhere between 10 and 30 seconds.

You can do ten, fifteen repetitions, until you start to feel like your muscles have been activated.

The last exercise I’m going to teach you is actually how to pull your shoulders back. If you’re seated at a computer and your head is forward, and you want to start pulling your head back, you will quickly realize that you can’t just pull your head back because your shoulders are pulled forward, blocking your head from being pulled back.

The first step in getting your head pulled back, is actually to get your shoulders pulled back.  Only then, are you able to correct the posture in your upper spine.

To do this you will need to master the “Y-T-W” exercise.

The first exercise is to lay on your belly and make the letter “Y” with your arms. Pull your arms up off the floor  which will pull your shoulder blades together. That’s the letter Y. 2016-09-17_2127

Now you can move that down to a letter “T”, squeezing the shoulder blades together and lifting the arms up as high as you can without overextending it too much.

Then, pull down into a letter “W”. When you pull the letter “W”, the arms come down. That’s pulling the bottom of your should blades together.

Hold each position for up to 10 seconds.

If you find The Y-T-W too much of a challenge, you can try something called “Superman”. “Superman” is when the left arm goes up and the right leg goes up.

What I don’t want you to do is raise your leg so high that you’re compressing your lower back. What I want you to do is just raise it up a little bit and then point your toe.

Imagine you are reaching for the wall in front of you and reaching for the wall behind you. Now you are activating all of the muscles from your shoulder, down through the spine and into the leg.

Slowly alternate.

A chiropractic adjustment does so much more than just release a joint, taking tension off of the nerves and muscles.  In fact I’ve heard it said this way:

 

Going to a chiropractor just for pain relief,

Is like robbing a bank and just stealing the pens!

 

A 2011 study by 9 doctors using PET scan technology (neuro-imaging technique) found that ONE CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT did the following:

 

1. Sympathetic tone was inhibited (ie. anti-stress effect) 

This literally means that your body has a harder time feeling stressed when you get adjusted.  Think about that!   Wow!

 

2. Salivary amylase was decreased (drop in the feeling of being stressed)

This is a measurement of the type of saliva that is present in someone that is highly stressed.

 

3. Regional brain metabolic changes (the brain is greatly influenced by the spine)

The metabolism of your brain is altered – it becomes more efficient in its firing (hence your general feeling of more energy) and it quiets down, just like it would in a stress-free environment.

 

4. Decreased muscle hypertonicity (relaxation of muscles)

The muscles around the neck, shoulders and back all release their tension – even in areas of the spine that weren’t actually touched during the adjustment. This is why for so many of you a proper upper spine adjustment is exactly what is required to release the tension in your lower back.

 

5. Decreased pain intensity (feeling better)

Pain is a chemical reaction.  The depolarization level of mechanoreceptors and pain receptors are altered to a level that they would be in a stess-free person.

 

What does this all mean?

This proves that no matter your age, your health, your heritage or your genetics, your SPINAL INTEGRITY will dictate NERVE SYSTEM FUNCTION! Remember HEALTH = OPTIMAL FUNCTION OF YOUR BODY. It is not the absence of symptoms.

 

Your back is your lifeline.  Your back determines whether or not you are always stressed. 

And since stress = death, I’d say that’s pretty important!

Additionally, liquid chlorophyll aids your body in destroying and removing germs and helps to prevent the growth of new germs. Remember, health is made up of four main categories. Nutrition, Movement, Thinking and Brain-Body. Which one does chiropractic help? Chiropractic is less about movement and more about brain. 90% of the nutrition to your brain comes from the stimulation and movement of your spine. When there is subluxation, your brain has a difficult time connecting and receiving information from that part of the body which results in altered AFFERENT(signal from body up to the brain) input causing the brain to respond with poor EFFERENT stimulus back to the body. Each adjustment restores balance and therefore nutrition to your brain.

Medical researchers in Germany have discovered a link between pressure on the spinal cord from subluxation and heart function in infants.  They saw the displaced spine on the infant’s x-ray and when the displaced spine was gently removed by a specific adjustment the cardiac function of the infant improved.

They went on to say that this type of “treatment” was successfully used to “treat” other disorders in children including wryneck, c-scoliosis, irritation of the brachial plexus (nerves that supply the arm), retardation of sensation and co-ordination as well as pain related conditions such as cry-babies with ‘3-month colic’ or hyperactivity with sleeplessness.

 The report went on to say that over 20,000 children had been “treated” without serious complication.

Finally, the researchers suggest, “It will be interesting in the future to investigate a possible relationship between pressure on the spinal cord (subluxation) and sudden infant death (SIDS).

Amazing – this research paper was written by non-chiropractors and it originated in Germany.  Canadian chiropractors could lean a thing or two about useful research from these medical doctors.  Canadian researchers are trying to position chiropractic as little more that a mediocre treatment of back pain.  Meanwhile children are dying, or going through life with compromised sensory and motor development.

Chiropractic was developed 121 years ago with a much broader vision than most people (even chiropractors) understand.  Science is just now catching up! 

I’m tired of reading another study saying that chiropractic helps people with low back pain.  Let’s get to work understanding the really serious problems that chiropractic can address. 

In fact 15 years ago researchers Schneier and Burns (1991) drew a connection between subluxation in the upper neck and sudden infant death.  We’ve had this groundbreaking research for 10 years and it has, for the most part, been ignored.

The world is seeing the awesome things that chiropractic has bent asking about for 121 years. The true solution to terrific health is through an optimal functioning nerve system, whether it's for an intact or someone whose 90. With principled, specific, scientific chiropractic adjustments your nerve system is maximized and you live a great life. Without it you die early and poorly.

“I don’t believe in Chiropractic”

While chiropractic is unique and different, it certainly is not something that you have to “believe in”.  Chiropractic, like gravity, works whether you believe in it or not.  Chiropractic produces results because it acknowledges scientifically confirmed facts:

The nervous system controls everything in your body.  Nerve impulses flow from the brain, down the spinal cord where nerves branch off to every organ and tissue.  Impulses sent back to the brain confirm that the body is functioning normally. 

The nervous system is so important, the body put 24 vertebra to protect it. This armor also supports your body but when you experience physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, environmental and chemical stress (all day, most days) these bones can get stuck or mis-align. This interferes with this exchange of communication by irritating the nervous system.  Dysfunction and ill health will result from a compromised nervous system.  Chiropractic care removes the interference and helps restore the integrity of the nervous system thereby promoting health and healing.

     “If you start, do you have to go for the rest of your life?”

You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. You don't have to brush your teeth, you don't have to eat well, you don't have to bring your car for an oil change. But anything worth having must be maintained. Regular spinal hygiene is not a new thing but as you can see its very important. Health is not a destination, it is a journey that starts with a choice.

This is a convenient claim made by critics who have chosen to overlook convincing proof to the contrary.  Being “all in your head” implies the power of suggestion.  Yet, chiropractic results have been experienced by newborns, infants, pets and others for whom the power of suggestion isn’t possible!  The power of suggestion can’t begin to explain the millions of patients who have been helped with chiropractic care. In fact, chiropractic has survived for the past 120 years and is the largest form on natural health care in the world. It has survived and thrived against much opposition simply because chiropractic always works. History does not lie and if you look up the facts you will see this. 

In 1918 the flu pandemic swept across the US killing thousands. During this time, more people were seeking chiropractic as a way to fight off the flu. Statistics reflect a most amazing, almost miraculous state of affairs. The medical profession was practically helpless wit the flu victims but chiropractors seemed able to do no wrong. National figures show that 1,142 chiropractors treated 46,394 patients for influenza during 1918, with a loss of 54 patients - one out of every 886! In New York City, during the same period, for every 10,000 cases medically treated, 950 died; and in every 10,000 pneumonia cases medically treated 6,400 died.

These figures are exact and a historical fact. 

  My medical doctor told me “Don’t let the chiropractor adjust your neck because it will cause a stroke.”

            Those in the medical profession who make this statement either have unknowingly been misinformed or they choose to spread misleading and inaccurate information.  When anyone makes a negative comment they need to back it up with fact (research), if not, it is all hearsay. 

The research produced to date has the occurrence of stroke with neck adjusting at 1 in 5,850,000 million adjustments.  The published statistics for women taking a birth control pill is that 1 in 25,000 will die from the pill.  If you are afraid of having your neck adjusted, you must be much more scared of the birth control pill. 4,000 children died last year from taking Tylenol. Last year, 40,000 people in Canada and 440,000 people in the US died from receiving medical intervention and those numbers continue to rise. Medical mistakes and errors is now the 3rd leading cause of death in North America.

            According to data obtained from the National Center for Health Statistics in the United States, it shows the mortality rate from stroke in the chiropractic patient population is less than half than that of the general population. Therefore, we could conclude that by having chiropractic care, your chances of having a stroke are actually reduced by 50%.

Facts and results have always proved that chiropractic is not only safe, it works! So what are you waiting for?

Have you ever woken up with a stiff neck or a sore low back. You can’t even bend down to tie your shoes without feeling agonizing pain. There is no such thing as a position where you feel comfortable. The pain is constant.

You stretch. Still feel the pain. You ice it. No change. You get a massage. That helps for a bit but then a couple hours or a day goes by and the stiffness returns. So you decided to take a drug. You take Advil, Tylenol, or an equivalent and it gives you some relief but as soon as it wears off the pain returns. You don’t want to have to take pills every day. You body was designed to work in harmony with itself. Your brain sends signals to 10 trillion cells each second and receives information from those cells so it can self regulate. Your body secretes and produces chemicals and hormones in the perfect quantity and at the perfect moment. It can even do this while you are relaxing or when you are running. Your body can adapt and still maintain optimal harmony in the body. We call this being in homeostasis. This was how you were designed to work and this is what we mean when we talk about wellness. There's just one problem. You live on earth!

Every day your body is being constantly stressed from the moment you get up, the drive to work, the posture you have while sitting all day, the chemicals in the air your breathe, the toxins in our foods, the mental and emotional stresses from family, friends, work, the sport injuries, the falls, accidents and so on. As time goes on, your body is still functioning but now under a constant load. This is called allostatic load. Further driving you from homeostasis and altering your body's natural ability to self regulate and thrive. Now you're in CRISIS mode.

How many people do you know if your life that are just getting by?

How many people do we know live their lives in crisis mode?

Truth is, your body can only sustain this allostatic pressure for so long before your adrenals fail, your body chemistry is so far from its original design that you now have high blood pressure, you can't sleep, your energy is gone, you have aches and pains, your body is not repairing the way it use to, you get headaches or migraines, irritable and you carry a bottle of pills with you just to get by.

What does this have to do with chiropractic?

It's simple, chiropractic was never designed to instantly make you feel better, it was designed to instantly make you work better. Chiropractic is the only form of health care that directly works with the nervous system and we use the spine as our main tool to access it. Each specific adjustment not only removes pressure off the joints, it stimulates little receptors which cause the brain to adapt altering how it perceives the body. This is the power of the adjustment, it changes and restores the relationship between you brain and body. Ultimately, altering its self-regulating systems to its original state by changing your biochemistry from crisis mode to the way you were designed to function, heal and repair.

This is where you start living again, the way you were designed to live. Chiropractic is not about pain or symptoms, its about restoring your body’s ability to self-regulate. This is wellness and the truth that I live with that can save millions of lives.

Milton Chiropractor baffles Medical Doctors: What he is doing is not possible, or is it?


It's been said many times, once the spine has started to break down there is nothing "we" can do. Many people continue to seek medical advice when it comes to neck and back pain. Have you ever been explained how a Lobster grows? I never thought this would be interesting but then I read an article that explained it. 

Lobsters are soft animals that grow into a hard shell but the shell does not grow larger. So after some time the lobster experiences a lot of pressure and gets very uncomfortable while it continues to grow and expends as it presses on the rigid shell. So it goes under a rock in oder to protect itself from predators and sheds the shell in order to grow a larger one. Once it is under pressure from the new shell, it repeats the same process and this goes on for a lifetime. The stimulus of being uncomfortable is what allows for growth.  

Could you imagine if that lobster when faced with increasing pressure, constraint, resistance and adversity went to an allopathic Doctor? He would be given pain medication, Adavan or other anti-anxiety pills and told to come back if things don't get better.

We all have moments in our lives when we will be faced with our own growing pains. Moments of stress, pressure, resistance and pain. It is the adversity that brings us into new life. In my years of practice serving hundreds of patients, it is the pursuit of the cause and not the treatment of the symptoms which has allowed for health and healing. It is well researched and documented that specific adjustments cause inhibitory stress responses in the brain. This lowers cortisol, sympathetic activity and increases brain-body function. Increasing how your body performs under times of stress is the key to understanding the stimulus and making the necessary adjustments in your life. Treating the symptom and not the cause is simply not good enough. Taking pressure of my brain and spinal cord gives my body the best chance it has to be strong during a season of growth. 

We all know someone that is masking symptoms with medication or treating their symptoms and not the cause. Give them a gift that will help them grow and gain strength so they can change and break free from the shell that has been holding them back from experiencing life to the fullest. We are dedicating September to kids. This month can be very stressful or filled with excitement for parents and/or their children. This is also the time when families prepare for school by getting school supplies, new outfits, haircuts, shoes and of course a new backpack. This is usually when things can go wrong and parents simply don't know how to choose the best backpack for their kids. A recent study has shown that kids as young as 5 are now experiencing back and neck pain. Most kids don't know how to voice their discomfort and spinal misalignment can also result in changes to their behavior.

Here are some helpful tips that will help your child carry his or her backpack with ease.

Carrying a heavy load can lead to poor posture and a distorted spinal column. Over time, this can cause muscle strain, headaches, back, neck and arm pain, and even nerve damage.  A heavy backpack carried on one shoulder forces the muscles and spine to compensate for the uneven weight. This places stress on the mid and lower back.


1. Select a lightweight backpack in vinyl or canvas.
2. Pick a backpack with two wide, adjustable and padded shoulder straps, along with a hip or waist strap, and padded back.
3. Try the backpack for fit and comfort – ensure it’s not too snug around the shoulders and armpits, and that it’s proportionate to the wearer’s body type.

Packing it properly

  • Your child’s backpack should only contain what is needed for that day.
  • A full backpack should be no more than 5 to 10% of the wearer’s body weight.
Example: Child Weight: 60 Lbs = Backpack 6 Lbs (That's the weight of lunch and one text book)
  • Place the heaviest objects close to the body and light or odd-shaped objects away from the back.x

Chiropractic Care vs. Injection Therapy: Which is Best For Cervical Disc Herniation

There is a large portion of the population who are dealing with various pain syndromes which includes neck pain from cervical disc herniations. According to Peterson, Schmid, Leemann, Anklin, and Humphreys (2013), this occurs in 83.2 out of every 100,000 people where symptoms range from mild to severe, but all negatively affect a person’s quality of life. To improve one’s quality of life, it becomes necessary to choose ways to manage and alleviate pain while reducing the side-effects of the actual treatment.  Common methods range from simple masking of symptoms with over-the-counter medications to prescription opiates and invasive surgeries.  Most people look for ways to manage pain and return to daily living activities without risky procedures and their inherent complications.

The use of over-the-counter medications and narcotics such as codeine and/or an oxycodone-acetaminophen combination like Percocet, is a common form of treatment by many primary care physicians and medical specialists alike.  Kuehn (2013) reported:

“The FDA is concerned about inappropriate use of [opioid pain medications], which has reached epidemic proportions in the United States,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, MD, during a press briefing in September.

There was a 300% increase in prescribing of opioid pain medications between 1999 and 2010, a period in which the number of painkiller overdose deaths among women increased 5-fold and the number of such overdose deaths among men increased 3.6 times, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2013:62[26];537-542). In 2010 alone, more than 15,000 US deaths were attributed to drug overdoses, and of the 10,000 overdose deaths in which a drug was identified, nearly two-thirds involved opioid pain medications…

The announcement comes after growing calls for the agency to tighten restrictions on the use of these drugs. In July 2012, Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP), a group that includes prominent specialists in addiction, public health, emergency medicine, and pain medicine, petitioned the FDA to change the labeling for this class of drugs to discourage inappropriate use (Kuehn BM.JAMA. 2012;308[12]:1194-1196). The group argued that the drugs’ indications were overly broad and not consistent with the evidence base and may have been facilitating marketing for broader use than was appropriate. Specifically, the group argued that the agency should drop moderate chronic non-cancer pain as an indication, set a maximum daily dose, and add a maximum duration of use of 90 days. (p. 1547).

The problem, as acknowledged by the FDA, is that the AMA and many in medical academia appear to concur with the addictive qualities of the medications. The alternative option is the chiropractic spinal adjustment and it has been concluded in scientific outcomes to be a superior avenue for the relief of pain and reduction of disability with few side effects.

The earlier discussed study by Peterson et al. (2013) has confirmed that spinal adjustments (manipulations) provide significant improvement for patients with neck pain from cervical herniated discs, as well as arm pain (cervical radiculopathy) without the inclusion of opiates or surgery. In addition, this improvement was seen at all times, particularly at 3 months. In addition, in this Swiss study, it was found that the presence of radiating arm pain (radiculopathy) was not a contraindication to chiropractic treatment nor was it a negative forecaster of outcomes.

This study also found that with cervical herniated discs with radiculopathy, 85.7% of the patients experiencing acute pain reported significant improvement by three months with no patients being worse. For the sub-acute patients, 76.2% reported significant improvement by three months with no patients being worse with their disability indexes which were reduced from the onset of chiropractic care.

Another form of treatment for neck and arm pain commonly used is cervical spinal injections. In the same study compares cervical injection provided a 25% reduction in patients’ symptoms. The results of this current study of spinal adjustment (manipulation) treatments had substantially better results with more than 85% of acute patients and 76% of sub-acute patient improving, with a 65% reduction in arm pain as well as 59% reduction in neck pain at three months.

Chiropractic is one of the safest treatments currently available in healthcare and when there is a treatment where the potential for benefits far outweighs any risk, it deserves serious consideration, particularly as a first line treatment. Whedon, Mackenzie, Phillips, and Lurie (2015) based their study on 6,669,603 subjects after the unqualified subjects had been removed from the study and accounted for 24,068,808 office visits. They concluded, “No mechanism by which SM [spinal manipulation] induces injury in normal healthy tissues has been identified” (Whedon et al., 2015, p. 265). One risk factor for chiropractic care is a disc herniation. A properly credentialed chiropractor who has been trained to differentially diagnose and appropriately triage the patient is clinically indicated in this population of patients. The chiropractor can engage in co-management with medical specialists.

To best serve patients, a clear understanding of the outcomes and risks of procedures becomes necessary. Further research into the efficacy of chiropractic manipulation provides a clearly safe and effective treatment to the above-referenced condition. Examination of the research provides insight of avenues for relief of symptoms upon which physicians can undoubtedly rely.

Everyone hears stories about people who spontaneously die days after receiving a clean bill of health from a medical doctor. Many know about someone in their 30’s who received a stage four cancer diagnosis without having any signs or symptoms of ill health. Though these stories are common, most of our culture continues to believe that bad health involves pain or symptoms.

It’s Not Just About the Pain!

“What are the benefits of Chiropractic Care?”

Many people will answer something to the effect of “chiropractic can help with back or neck pain.”

Many people enter our office with a back, neck, or headache complaint and most of our population believes this is the major benefit of a Chiropractic Adjustment. 

THIS COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH! 

Let me explain a few compelling stories that may help reveal the true value of Chiropractic and why we believe every man, woman, and child deserves to have a Chiropractor as part of their healthcare team. 

In 1918 there was a Flu Pandemic that killed 20 million people worldwide. Over 500,000 died in the U.S. alone over an estimated 6 month period of time! 

An up and coming profession called Chiropractic was only 23 years old at the time and just making its way on the scene. Documentation shows that people who were under Chiropractic Care had 1/40th the death rate of those who were not. It became well-known that Chiropractic helped prevent both the flu and/or death from the flu. This marked a huge growth in Chiropractic awareness and literally put the new healing profession on the map….For Immune System Issues!

It sounds silly but since most people use chiropractic exactly like they would use a juice cleanse, this is a conversation we need to have.

Many people LOVE juice cleanses. They eat tons junk food and drink lots of alcohol and sugary drinks, do not exercise, and sit in their cars and at their desks all day. Little by little their body shows the signs of their habits. They feel bloated and out of shape, maybe even constipated. Their clothes get tighter and their skin breaks out. Finally, they hit that wall. They can’t spend even one more day feeling sluggish, tired, and gross.  So they decide to go on a cleanse and try to purge their system… or maybe its not even that they feel so awful. Maybe it is that they need to fit into a bathing suit or wedding dress. Either way, in the short term, they need to undo what they’ve been doing.

Three days later, they feel slim and light and energetic. Boom — The cleanse worked! 10 pounds down and happy as a clam, they go back to doing exactly what they were doing before. If juice cleanses had a genuine slogan it would read something like, “Come back to me when you feel disgusting and I’ll fix you for a few days.”

Most people use chiropractic the exact same way. They put their body under an incredible amount of stress. They sit a lot, assume chronic poor postures, are de-conditioned (out of shape) and lack movement and exercise. One day, their body reaches its limit and starts to hurt. Maybe they reach for a bottle of Advil. Or, maybe they decide they’d like a more “natural” approach and have heard chiropractic care can help. So they call and make an appointment. They go in for their ‘treatment”. After one or maybe a handful of “treatments”, they feel better again. Then they stop going and return to exactly what they were doing before. Their chiropractor says, “Great. Glad you’re better. Come back when it hurts again.” In both cases, this is just a very temporary fix for a problem they have spent months or years creating.

A juice cleanse helps you feel better because you stop putting toxins in your body and start giving it nutrients. It has nothing to do with flushing your system. All it does is give your body some of the raw materials that it needs to start working better.

Amazingly, chiropractic works the exact same way. Having a chiropractic adjustment gives your nervous system a boost. Your body needs a nervous system that is firing on all cylinders in order to feel and function at its best.  A single adjustment won’t cause instant magical healing in tissues that are damaged. Instead, what it can do is help your body regulate better. The result is a proper immune response. Which means less inflammation, as well as the correct signals going to and from the brain in the most efficient way possible. One benefit of this is that your pain response is normal, not exaggerated, so the adjustment may help you feel better.

Some people are always going to be juice cleanse people. They are always going to go through phases of letting themselves go and wanting a quick fix. Similarly, there will always be people who use chiropractic care just for emergency pain relief. If you fall into this category and are happy, keep on keeping on. However, there are many people out there who are not juice cleanse people. People who would rather give their body what it needs most of the time and who like to feel and function better consistently instead of the detox-retox roller coaster.

Using chiropractic care just to fix pain is like using fruits and vegetables just to cleanse. They can be effective in those roles, but if that’s all you think they are good for, you’re missing the big picture. Appropriate care for your brain and neurological system, is just like nutritious food, both have the biggest impact on your health when used on a consistent basis.

I was less than a year into practice when a patient named Ray began telling me how much his marriage had improved since beginning Chiropractic care. Cortisol levels decrease testosterone and destroy sex drive. Being capable of sexual performance requires proper amounts of blood flow to the pelvic area and genitals. Normal body functions are altered when your nervous system is in a state of sympathetic overload, known commonly as a physiological state of fight or flight.

Research shows that a vertebral subluxation increases sympathetic overload (dominance), thus increasing a release of cortisol. The cortisol release decreases sex hormones, sex drive, and normal sexual functions.

A pharmaceutical company invented Viagra to improve heart function. The drug promoted increased blood flow and ended up creating the side effect of increased male arousal. Now, Viagra makes 50 billion dollars a year.

Hint: It’s not about learning a new way to cope with it…
We are fighting an impossible battle if our goal is to eliminate stress.

The picture above is from a study of a brain under MRI imaging. On the left you see the brain lit up many areas. It looks like you are flying over a city at night and looking down at all the lights.
They put this individual in the MRI and then created a stress in his body to measure how the brain responds. The spots of light represent all the areas the brain is recruiting to help adapt and handle that stress.

What happens next is revolutionary….

They took that same person out of the MRI and gave him a chiropractic adjustment. Once he was under the MRI scan again they created the same stress as before to monitor the brain’s response.The picture on the right is the same person adapting to the same stress, this time after a chiropractic adjustment. WOW!

Was there less stress? Nope, it was exactly the same.

But his scan clearly shows less areas being recruited to cope with the stress.

Chiropractic adjustments bring balance, harmony, and organization! Less energy and more efficiency in dealing with stress is a result of Chiropractic care.

Most people seek Chiropractic care as a last resort. When everything else has failed and someone either mentioned it or you happen to fall upon it. But the truth is, when it comes to treating symptoms, Chiropractic when compared to massage therapy, acupuncture, physiotherapy or even taking pain medication is no better. Where Chiropractic leads and has always lead the way is long term health and over all wellness. So the question you need to ask yourself is what is your health goal? Is it to get out of pain? Or is it to make changes to your life now so that you can have a better future?

 

Chiropractic does not treat conditions. Chiropractic was never meant to do that. Chiropractic is simple; it does what everything else fails to do. Treat the person, not the pain. Chiropractic removes the pressure that leads to symptoms. More research shows that the adjustment, that only a chiropractor can give, resets how your brain connects to your body and helps build the connections needed to maintain and live a healthy life.
